I recieved a Razor from Doug @ camera Land several months ago. I cant tell you all enough how well camera Land treats people.
I have really put the Razor through some tough times and it works great. What a scope.

In the sand, this scope has taken a beating. It is not affected by heat, cold, water or anything I have submitted it to. I have performed several insertions at all hours of the day and night. I have dropped it from 15' plus and didnt even think of losing zero.
There are so many good features about this scope, I dont even know where to start. At lowlight, this scope has Very good light gathering. Several evenings with good moonlight, I have been able to make shots count. Some have said the eye relief is hard to get used to, mine has been very usable and good even on big recoiling rounds. The lighted reticle is very nice and not so intense you cant see through it making it very usefull. One of the best things are the large knobs and zero stops. What a time saver.
I have used this scope long enough now, that it is my go too.
I trust my life and the life of my brothers to this scope and its performance. The ranging system is spot on. I have been able to range things very quickly and easily.
Everything about this scope it good in my opinion. They are made like a brick shithouse. The rings that came with it have also performed well for me.
These scopes are a first rate scope at a very good price. If you need optics that really count, Razor HD is the way to go and Better yet, the service CameraLand gives.
Thanks for some amazing service Doug,
JM

Good review.

I have an EBR-3 on mine, and as stated for me this scope is rock solid and performs very well.

Vortex may be the new kid on the block somewhat as to tactical scopes, but if they follow their footsteps as far as their bino’s, they will continue to supply the folks with products and development in the products that will surpass most expectations and with the service needed once in a while if something is out of operation.

Re: Vortex Razor HD 5-20 and CameraLand

Semi-related question. Navigator mentioned dropping the thing from 15'.

I'm much afraid of something like that because when I dropped my Ruger 10/22 (not as heavy as an AI or AICS precision rifle) from "mere" 3 feet onto concrete - the fall ripped the base-holding screws from the receiver. So I had to re-tap the receiver - wasn't too hard, but not at all pleasant (to my surprise, the el-cheapo scope I had on that 22LR rifle wasn't damaged). But I shudder thinking of what could happen if a 15-17 lb rifle took a fall onto such a hard surface from a greater height.

I understand that "real" rifles are made from stronger material than aluminum of 22LR Ruger. Still, is it strong enough to withstand such a fall without at least busting the screws?

I'd appreciate you sharing your experience regarding this. Or perhaps looking for reassurance that a hard fall - which I would of course try to avoid - isn't likely to damage either my rifle or the scope, including base/rings/attacment, etc.

P.S. I fully agree with everything JM said about the scope - I love my Razor HD.

Re: Vortex Razor HD 5-20 and CameraLand

With a rifle like my M700 the scope base has lugs that take the shear load off the screws and transfer it onto the receiver.

This is with a HIGH QUALITY base like Seekins or Badger. Cheaper bases like the EGW do not have this feature and will shear the screws.

If my scope ever took a hit hard enough to remove it from the weapon, then the glass would be shattered and tube would probably be seriously bent.

I am just finishing up accuracy testing on the Razor HD and I am getting ready to go into the "durability" testing after I get some more cold bore shots on it. Look for immersion, sub-zero and shock testing.

So far I really like the feel of this scope. The controls are where they need to be and very tactile. It works well in the dark.

Re: Vortex Razor HD 5-20 and CameraLand

I forgot to mention Immersion. I have even had to lay my entire rig down in about 2 feet of water. No issues with anything.
It was lay down or be the only moving stick sitting upright in some calm water. It has performed flawlessly for me.

Nice! JM, how do you prepare your rifle for firing after immersion? Just pour the water out of the barrel, or something more elaborate is necessary to be accurate (and reasonably safe)? Not that I expect to reproduce your feat any time soon!

Re: Vortex Razor HD 5-20 and CameraLand

If a round was chambered you need to unlock your bolt and withdraw the cartridge enough break the seal. Point the muzzle down and let it run out.

If you think anything other than water is in the barrel, punch it out. This is about the only reason I carry an Otis cable in the field. It's stiff enough to punch out minor obstructions.

Re: Vortex Razor HD 5-20 and CameraLand

Anytime my rifle gets submerged, I always clear the round and chamber. Even in threat situations, I always check to make sure there is not any obstruction. You must clear the water. It will jack the pressures way up if you dont with potential to blow it up.
I do carry an Otis kit, Very small, but will allow me to get the barrel cleared if any obstructions occur.
It doesnt need to be dry or spotless, just do a visual quick check to make sure there is no mud or anything.
Another thing to really keep an eye on is getting sand in the chamber. It can make chambering and extracting very difficult.

I have had my Razor very dusty and gritty and it has never missed a beat. Everything is sealed very well.
Thanks again to Douf and Razor. This is a team that is hard to beat.
