I'm looking to upgrade from my Vortex PST 4-16x50 and have narrowed it down to two scopes. I don't think I can lose either way, but I thought I'd look for some advice from anyone that has experience with BOTH. Or at least the same reticles. On paper these two scopes seem to be very close and it may come down to a matter of preference, but UKD will be a decent amount of what I'll be doing (not a lot of PRS matches but that type of shooting) and the Tremor 3 reticle has me all hot and bothered. The feature that so far has me thinking it'll be the superior reticle is the Refined 1/10 MIL trees (among others). Obviously you can use the EBR-7B to do the same, but the T3 seems like it may be better, or at least faster and more user friendly. Anyone with experience have .02 they'd like to share? Also, is illuminated reticle on the LMk5 a big deal? I don't see myself doing too much low light shooting and even if I did, wouldn't the glass be good enough to collect light to make an ethical shot on game for example? I have several illuminated reticles and can't remember ever using them but someone on a different thread warned against not getting the illuminated reticle.

The EBR has horizontal and vertical .1 mil marks. What more would you need? But if I may ask why do you need this? Are you Mil/LEO sniper training? If not, it is 2019. Just get a rangefinder and be done with it. your range estimation will be leagues more accurate and much much faster. I don't mean that disrespectfully, just my view on it all. If you're not in danger of being shot back at I'd take a rangefinder everyday.

Tagged in for sure. I am in the process of deciding this exact same question. I went today and held and looked through Mark5HD in the store. I really liked it. But is seemed really "big" for a hunting rifle with 35mm tube and 56mm objective. I wonder if the AMG will have better glass. Low light performance is going to be a big thing for me as I will be hunting with it.

The Mark 5 gathers a ton of light. I dont think you would be disappointed in the brightness of the scope

The illuminated reticle is very helpful for low light shooting, night matches, and low light hunting. The AMG is going to be your only option there unless you want to pay out the ass for it from Leupold. The AMG also does incredibly well in low light considering the smaller objective and tube.

I think if I were going for a hunting rig only I’d go AMG all the way but a few ounces matter less to me because I’ll primarily be using this for extended LR shooting. But it could find its way into a LR lightweight big caliber rig for hunting out west. That’s on the short list.

I can vouch that the AMG glass is quite good at low light, at least in my eyes. I've shot some of those last light coyotes with my AMG without illumination on and never had an issue seeing them.

Never had an issue with it or the EBR reticle holding me back in a match either.

The Mark5 is definitely a bigger scope if running it on a hunting rifle.

Leupolds additional $'s for illumination is kind of a joke..

I have both to compare side by side. The AMG has noticeably better glass than the MK5. The quality of the AMG is top tier.. The MK5 is a very nice scope but its not in the same league as Vortex AMG.
Its the flagship of Vortex for good reason.

I own a Mark 5 and think it’s wonderful. It’s size (3.6-18) and features are amazing. That being said, I honestly think the AMG glass is truly outstanding and the scope is made well. I’ve not shot the AMG, only looked through it but I was impressed. I ended up getting the Mark 5 but both are awesome. Get whichever one you like the reticle most with. Seriously.

I have both the AMG and the 3.6 Mk5. I don't have much time behind the Mk5 yet. But initial thought is that the AMG glass is better to my eye. But it is not a massive difference.

That being said, the size, weight, and form factor of the Mk5 make up for a whole lot. It is a very compact, lightweight package.

My AMG lives on an AR10. My Mk5 on a 556 SPR.

IMHO, the AMG is the best ounce-for-ounce scope out there. Alpha glass, good reticle options, good turrets, and useful illumination all in a compact, lightweight package. Really, really hard to beat for the size/weight compared to the big 34mm tube scopes that most folks are using.

I run the AMG on my match rifle and love it. My only complaint is the eye can be a little tight in match situations.

I truely believe it’s the best around scope. A lot of high end features in a smaller package then most. It’s at home on the range, match, or hunting.
