Have any of you guys ran this against the SS 1-6? Also is everyone still running the BDC ret in the razor or do some of you guys have the mil ret? Looking to order one or the other in the next 2 weeks.
I've had the chance to compare those and some others side by side (though not shooting), here's my 2 cents:
Razor with JM-1 original BDC reticle: heavy, good glass, thick reticle, bright dot illumination, clumsy (IMHO) illumination control, very large ocular housing, excellent field of view. The undercover turrets are kinda cool, but don't seem to be meant for running exposed and wouldn't be as convenient for dialing as the SS turrets.
SS 1-6x: average weight, similar glass but probably slightly below the Razor, glass etched reticle with conventional illumination (not as bright but illuminates more of the reticle), more average dimensions, field of view average, nice turrets under caps
Between the two of those, the Razor is noticeable bigger and heavier, and is much more biased towards 3-gun or other fast paced shooting, while the SS is more like a precision scope that goes down to 1x. I would favor the SS for a use that includes shooting beyond 400-500 yards, but it may not be as fast playing bullet hose at 5-10 yards. To me, the field of view is what stands out most with the Razor.
I've also compared those two with the Leupold Mark 6, Leupold VX-6 1-6x circle-firedot, and Burris XTRII 1-5x:
-Mark 6 with CMR-W 762: awesome at just about everything. Busy reticle but it works. Awesome glass clarity, best glass I've seen in a 1-6x scope and good eyebox despite the 20mm objective lens and resulting smaller exit pupil. Nice turrets. Fairly light. It costs more and you get more. Only downside is that it doesn't
feel as bombproof as the Razor, although it may well be.
-VX-6: great field of view, similar to Razor. Glass quality similar to Razor or maybe better. Another thick chunky reticle with a center illuminated dot, like the Razor. Don't like the illumination control, and the turrets are cheap compared to all others listed here. Very, very light at about 14oz, which is just over HALF the weight of the Razor. If weight counts, this is the one to get.
-Burris XTRII 1-5x: yeah, it only goes to 5x. Everything else is very good to excellent. IMHO the best illumination of all listed here, including the Mark 6. Very nice turrets with zero stop (only the Mark 6 also has zero stop in this list). Glass quality is very good, comparable to the SS and maybe just a tiny bit behind the Razor and VX-6. Same weight as SS at about 22oz. If you don't mind SFP and 5x, this is a really good scope in this category.
My other 2 cents: the Razor is a great 3-gun scope for people who only carry the carbine a few minutes at a time. It is really heavy, especially in a quality mount. It does have great field of view, but so do the VX-6 and Mark 6, and the XTRII isn't bad on FOV either. I think the Razor was designed primarily for 3-gun use and I think it does well for that, but it's not as good a balance if you might be doing other things with it. For any sort of precision use the FFP reticles in the SS and Mark 6 would be far better, and both of those have great turrets as well.
Flame away...
