I got what I think is an awesome deal on the 3-18 vortex razor gen 2 mrad-$1800 New OTD. Now I'm wondering if I should have spent another $400 for the 4.5-27? Field of view vs magnification? I will be shooting out to 1000 yards and currently use the swfa SS 10x which seems ample so I was stoked with 18x originally.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

The 18x will be more than enough to get you to 1000. I routinely set my 4.5-27 at 10-15 power to make 1000 yard shots. The extra top end is nice to zoom in on a certain object but you won't stay there. You have a great scope there, put it through its paces.

Really depends on the use. Your scope will be a little lighter and a lower minimum mag. Unless you're shooting out to 1500 yards, 18 will be more than enough

Pretty much what Stag said. I have used my 3-18x at matches to shoot to 1250 yards. The scope has great glass and you will be able to see very well with it. Mount it up and go shoot and have fun. You did fine.

A small story, I have shot a 408 Chey Tac to 2500 yards with a 5.5-22x scope on 17x and that was on MOA sized targets. You will do fine with that scope.

Thanks guys! I'll keep the order in place and spend the extra $ on some good rings.

I made the same scope change on my 308. I was looking at the 3-18 but decided for a variety of reasons to go with the 4.5-27. I don't regret that choice one bit. sure I paid in a few ounces and a few more bucks but I really like being able to crank up that magnification to see hits etc since I shoot alone most times. Kinda like having a spotting scope and rifle scope in one for me. What works for one person does not however translate to the next. BTW Ben at Sport Optics really took good care of me as a Hide member....Some store mulling around in here really do nothing for Hiders, while places like Sport Optics go above and beyond.

I was in your shoes when I bought my Razor GEN II 3x18 but have never regretted my purchase , as far as rings go I went with ARC M10s . The M10s are by far the most user friendly rings I've ever owned and QUALITY . I routinely swap the scope from my 308 to my 300WM with very little point of aim shift , only minor re-zero adjustments for cartridge performance differences .

I have a Vortex PST 4-16, and the only time I wish I had more is when I'm shooting groups for load development. For me, more magnification would help me see the center of the target better at distances greater than the usual 100 yards. But I seriously doubt I'd ever need much more magnification than I've got for anything else.

I guess what I'm saying is, while it's nice to have it and not need it, the extra magnification can be lived without.

I run a 3-18 on my AI-AT Creedmoor. Never had an issue of not enough mag, and have shot out to 1260. I also have a 4.5-27, but I use that on a varminter rig, where the extra mag is nice for puling out the prairie dog that is only showing the top off his head, and maybe an eyeball, above the mound. The extra mag is nice for very small targets, that blend into the surrounding terrain. It is not really required for white steel plates that are several MOA in size.

JMTCW....

This.

How often are you going to need mag to be less then 4.5? If ever?

I read your first post as you bought it and had it. The 3-18x will do you well but it depends on use. As I have given the advice before for people buying one scope that you should get the higher power as you can always dial down and this is mostly for PRS style shooting. For general use the 3-18x will be fine and it will even work well for PRS as I have mentioned I have used mine in a few matches. So the end decision comes to you and what you want to spend.

If you can swing the $400, go for the higher mag. As most have already opined, 18x is enough for PRS, but it's likely you would find situations to take advantage of 27x, and the Razor Gen II has the glass to pull it off. The weight is practically the same for both scopes. The 4.5-27 has a nice FOV at 4.5 power, I doubt you'll find its low power is not low enough.
