Hi, I've never used any of the Vortex products, in particular the Viper PST's, but I've heard good about them. In fact, I've never owned cheap optics save one ATN scope over a decade ago, and a SWFA 10x scope a buddy in the army had on an M14 --it was actually a decent cheap scope, but I only used it for a day or two. I've heard that the PST's are comparable to the Leupold tactical scopes and that they are made in the same factory as some other quality scope (I can't recall which). I don't know how much of this is true as we tend to defend our purchases even if they are marginal at best.

Now first off, I'm no longer in the army. If I were and I needed a scope they don't issue I'd just go for USO, Leupold or Nightforce right off the bat. Still, I don't like junk and I've been shooting for far too long to appreciate anything that hampers my abilities.

The ones I am primarily intersted in are the 1-4x and the 2.5-10x. I plan on using the 1-4x on a .300BLK as I have an idea on how to make use of the reticle using subs and supers by laminating a trajectory/adj. table on the buttstock. This rifle will probably never shoot past 300m. I plan on using the 2.5-10x on a 6.5G. Here is the issue: that rifle is a sub-MOA rifle, scary accurate, and the ACOG on it does not do it justice at all (I built an SDM rifle, ended up with something much more accurate --Satern barrels are THE shit!). This rifle *should* be capable of 12" groups or less at 1000m, though I haven't stretched it's legs yet. So the last thing I want to do is put a scope on it that can't keep up with the rifle.

I also would like it to be rugged. Damn rugged. Needs good glass and a reliable reticle with reliable adjustments, ie, a mil needs to equal a mil.

Reason I am considering these scopes is that: 1. I'm no longer in service and don't *need* the best. 2. I have two rifles I need to scope and want to do them "both for the price of one" as it were --or close to it. 3. I am under the impression that Vortex PST is nearly as good as the comparable Leupolds.

So based on that, do you think the Vortex PST is gonna cut it for me? Why or why not? For those of you that have, say, a PST and a comparable scope, how does it match up? Lastly, would any of you be willing to deploy with one or use one in rifle matches that you intend on winning?

For $1100 I can scope both rifles, but if I use Leupold it will cost twice that. However, if the PST isn't that great of a scope (as in worth every cent if not more) then I may have to swallow hard and just go with what I know works. I'd much rather pay $2200 and get what I want than pay $1100 and then STILL have to pay $2200 to do it right. So your advice and recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Vortex scope questions

i have a pst 6-24 ffp and i have been very happy with it. i paid 950 for it and it was money well spent. i am now looking at getting a 1-4 for my ar. i few guys i know have them and really like them. i have shot with them and also really like them. i think they are the best bang for you buck. i am fairly new to the long range game and have all experience in three gun and pistol shooting. if i start shooting matches with my current set up and it doesnt let me down i dont see why i would need to upgrade to a more expensive scope. if i did i would go with a vortex razor. they have outstanding warranty and customer service. that being said check out this link its a review by lowlight on the 1-4

    Re: Vortex scope questions

I'm not trying to knock anyone's equipment, but you keep comparing the PSTs to Leupolds. Personally, I don't think that Leupolds are all that and have found the PSTs superior to most Leupolds that I've seen, especially in the price range. Of course, I haven't gotten to shoot all of the available Leupolds, but most of the more common ones.

In any case, you say that you want a damed tough scope. When someone tells me that they want a damned tough scope with good glass, at a reasonable price, my knee jerk is Nightforce.

Since you asked about the PSTs, I'll say this. I've had three or four of them and they are damned fine scopes. The glass is very good and the build is pretty darned good. Not to mention that their customer service is second to none.

If you find yourself needing to send something in for repair, you can generally count the return time in days rather than weeks or months.

    Re: Vortex scope questions

I own four Leupolds and two Vortex scopes. I cannot agree with the opinion that the Vortex are better quality than the Leupolds. I would however rank them equal in quality. Given that the equivalent Vortex scope is less expensive than the Leupold, they are certainly a better value.

Thanks for the link, it again said what I've heard... I wish he'd said more about the reticle though.

I suppose I'll just pull the trigger on it. I can get one now and the other later I suppose and be sure myself as well. It seems like it would be good for the .300BLK, so why not? If it works out, if I like it, I'll get the one for the 6.5.

If anyone else has something to add I'll be checking in but I'm starting to get the idea the scopes are worth the price.
