hello all i recently purchased a vortex viper pst 6-24 power and have noticed because my 100 yard zero is .7 MIL away from the 'bottom out' of the scope (the elevation goes no further down without causing failure)

the issue i have is that the 100 yard zero is so close to the bottom of the elevation range it is creating a weird shadowing at the very top of the reticle more toward the top of the duplex

if i dial the turret a full rotation up this dissappears.

will this cause me to have eye releif (eye alignment) issues (as in where my head and eye sit in relation to the optic)

has anybody else had an issue with such things.

the advantage to having my 100 yard zero so close to the bottom of the elevation travel is i can physically dial all the way to 1200 yards
the disadvantage is the slight difference in sight picture at 100 yards...

any input would be appreciated

That shadowing that you see is actually the inside of the scope tube due to the erector being so close to bottoming out. It's also why it disappears when you dial in more elevation because it's going back towards its optical center in the center of the scope tube. I've seen this in other optics such as a S&B 5-25 but it shouldn't cause you any eye relief issues.

i kinda gathered that but i wasn't absolutely sure you know how things as small as this can play on a man thanks for the reply

Have you considered using a set of rings or a base that will put some pitch in your scope? Burris makes Signature Zee rings that have inserts to adjust your pitch. You could then zero at a longer range and still have plenty of elevation for 1200 yds.

should be alright with the shadowing have been able to get nice groups out of the set up so far at 100 yards it won't bug me too much as this rifle was built to shoot out to distances exceeding a kilometer.

the only reason i was really worried about it was it might have effected my grouping when im doing the odd load development but it hasn't and the only other time im going to have to shoot any closer is for hunting purposes.

the way i could tell if it was effected by that shadowing was that i wasn't getting any elevation stringing
