So,

I got my Vortex Viper in the mail yesterday and got it mounted up and out to the range today. I'm shooting a Remington 700 SPS Tactical (.308), B&C Tactical Medalist A2, EGW 20 MOA base, Warne tactical rings.

I sited in toady and was completely bottomed out on elevation and was 1 inch high at 100 yards. Luckily, the windage was almost dead on perfect out of the box. It appears that this Viper has waayyyy more up travel than down travel. Anyway, I don't want to continue to use this scope at the mechanical stop and figure I need to swap out the 20 MOA base with something else. I still want to be able to take it to 1000 yards, so I still think I will need an angled base.

So, here comes my question ......... If I am an inch high with a 20 MOA base, how much travel will I get by going to a 15 MOA base? Will a 15 MOA base get me 20 more 1/4 MOA clicks? And .... will 5 MOA, or 20 1/4 MOA clicks be far enough off the mechanical stop?

I did the google search but couldn't find the info I was looking for.

Re: Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 PA and 20 MOA Base Issue

That's peculiar as I've had that scope and no issues getting a 100yd with a 20moa base. That scope has about 65moa of total elevation and should let you get a 100yd zero with a 20moa base.

In your situation, before I get another base, I'd disassemble everything, make certain nothing is cocked and try again. If that doesn't fix it, a 15moa base should give you about 3-5moa of down travel.

Edit: Had another thought; your rear bridge might be higher than usual. Take the base off and check if you need to bed the front of the base.

No, base fit's perfect, doesn't need bedding.

I didn't mention that I am using warne high rings with the Vortex.

I did speak with Tim (I think) at Vortex today. He said that using a shorter ring height may bring it down far enough to get the 100 yard zero. So, I'll be trying out a set of shorter rings first. If that doesn't get me lower, I'll just replace it with a 15 MOA base.
