Is the glass in both scopes the same, or does the PST have clearer optics?
I am trying to decide if the Viper will be good enough for me, or if it's worth it to wait and get a PST. If the difference is mostly external- matching reticle and turrets, etc. I will just get the Viper.

Re: Vortex Viper and PST questions

According to several posts by Vortex, the PST's should have better glass. Not sure if that means HD glass like the Razor but the Viper 6.5-24x50mm is sharp and clear as anything I have ever owned.

Re: Vortex Viper and PST questions

It sounds like the Viper is the one for me. I have made that decision several times, but I keep looking- like a dumbass. I have a problem- if it's good enough something else must be better for not much more.
Now I have to decide between the 44mm and 50mm. I may never need the extra light gathering of the 50mm, but I might.
Is the difference worth $100.00? with the smaller Viper being 44mm instead of 40mm it doesn't seem to be as much of a difference.

Re: Vortex Viper and PST questions

I too am skeptical about the Vipers. After waffling back and forth for quite some time between a Monarch or Viper for a 22-250, I think I'm ordering a 6.5-20x44 mil dot Viper tomorrow. I know the Monarch is a good enough scope for my needs, but I guess I just want to see what all the fuss is about with the Vipers.

Re: Vortex Viper and PST questions

My Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 has as good of glass as any one of my 4 NightForce 5.5-22x50.

Drive train on the NightForce is Way above the Vortex Viper the NightForce has very solid clicks where at the Viper is just OK but tracks 100% with no problem, cant wait for the PST to come out got 4 on order!

Fisky, it it makes any difference...I have owned both, I still have the Viper!

If the 22-250 is for small varmints get the duplex. The others are a little thick. I own a 6.5-20X44 and it is excellent.

Re: Vortex Viper and PST questions

Well, you guys reinforced my decision on the Viper. Thank you!

The gun will mainly be used for coyotes. A mil dot probably isn't necessary for it, but I'd like to have the option should I choose to use mils as holdovers or the rangfinder isn't cooperating.

Re: Vortex Viper and PST questions

I have seen it mentioned that the Viper PST may have the same HD glass from Japan as the Vortex Razor. This may be a dumb question, but what makes HD glass "High Definition"? Is this just a marketing term or is there some specific standard that makes HD glass from Japan stand out from non-HD glass? Is there a particular condition (say low light) where HD glass performs significantly better?

Re: Vortex Viper and PST questions

Not sure about the HD glass. I have seen the Swarovski HD spotting scope and it is great.

I have heard that the difference between Vortex's ED line and the regular line of glass is marginal at best and not worth the difference in price. Please dont take me the wrong way about Vortex, as a company and their products, they are great.

I would prefer the PST over the Viper, but then you would have to wait another month to 2 months. Just think of how many coyotes you could have killed...

You wont have a problem with either choice in the matter.
