Just curious for some opinions on whether to get a Viper HS or go for the PST. I have a Savage 22-250 that currently has a Nikon Monarch on there but not too fond of it. I have a Viper HS 4-16 on my 300 and LOVE IT!!! I know I want to get another viper scope but just can't decide if I want the PST or HS LR. The power I would like to get would be 6-24x50mm. I would use to shoot prairie dogs, coyotes and targets. Thanks for opinions!

Re: Vortex Viper HS

The biggest differences between the PST vs HS LR would be:

Reticule
Exposed windage knob- PST
Reticule illumination-PST

If you don't need an illuminated reticle or exposed windage knob consider the HS LR. I have a PST and am very happy with it. I should have a HS LR arriving on my doorstep very soon. Internally I believe the are the same scope.

None that I have experienced.

Re: Vortex Viper HS

The HS is a great scope as the reticle is unobtrusive. Mine tracked perfectly, and with the 1/2 moa elevation, dials up very quick. To OP if you will be hunting yotes dawn to dusk, then I would go PST, or maybe Leupold VX-R. Just that the thin reticle is great for shooting prairie dogs, but can get lost in the darkness. I have (2) HS LR 4-16x44 with BDC. Perfect plains hunting scope.

Re: Vortex Viper HS

Okay thanks. I had a previous Nikon with their bdc and I did not care for it at all. I was curious if the illuminated reticle and the xlr were a good asset or is just the extra money.

Re: Vortex Viper HS

I agree, I am not a fan of the big ol' Nikon drop dots. If you feel you can use the xlr reticle, then it will be worth the investment. Honestly, I usually use the HS bdc when shooting steel. When hunting, I shoot max point blank range. I range with LRF and then dial anything beyond MPBR.

Re: Vortex Viper HS

Okay thanks for the input. I decided that I might not like the illuminated reticle so that puts me back on the HS series. I was looking around today and saw the Zeiss 6.5-20 with varmint reticle and it looks very tempting. I know that zeiss is praised for having nice glass and being a quality scope so I am debating this now.
