Rifle Scopes Vortex Viper

Re: Vortex Viper

I just got one a week ago from Scott at Liberty Optics.

The glass is pretty clear and it feels solid. I have not got it in the field yet, but so far I am happy with my purchase.

Re: Vortex Viper

I have three and for the money crystal clear. Indexing turrets super simple. True tracking and holds zero well. I had an issue with a Vortex tripod for my spotting scope. One call to customer service in Wisconsin and I had repair part next day! Customer service was excellent! Provided intelligent advice to questions I had regarding crossfire scope. I will continue to buy these scopes when looking in this price range. I have one Crossfire on a 22, Diamondback on Weatherby 243, and Viper on 308.

Re: Vortex Viper

Just recieved mine 2 weeks ago appears to be fairly good glass
keep in mind I bought this knowing full well it was not going to be a nightforce, schmidt, or lupy. Have not used it yet but appears to be a pretty good bang for the buck but we will find out.

LOL, the glass on the Viper I had was at least equal to both of my NXSs

Re: Vortex Viper

I have 1 Viper 6.5-20x 50mm scope. To my eyes, this scope is as clear as the 3 NXS scopes I had. It is no where near as 'tank like' and the NXS clicks are probably the best by far of any scope maker but the Viper is an excellant scope. It tracks great and has the quickest method of rezeroing the turrets. For the money I think it is hard to beat. It is 2nd fp and last I knew adjustments are 1/4" and I don't think the reticle is etched glass but if you can live with these 'drawbacks' , you should like this scope.

You haven't used a Vortex Razor, S&B PMII, or a PH have you?

Hunter 223
Yes I like the clicks on NXS scopes the best of any scope I have owned. I have owned 3 NXS, 4 USO , and 3 PR scopes. I have sold all my NXS and only kept the USO ST 10 for my M1A. I have 3 PR scopes and like them the best by far but NXS clicks are much more positive and have a much wider spacing than PR. I have never owned a S&B or the new Razor.

Re: Vortex Viper

David, you should be able to get the retro-fit for the PH scopes or send them in they changed the metallurgy on the click mechanism as well as the geometry of the clicker and added an extra spring for stiffer clicks. I'm sure it'd be covered under warranty...

Re: Vortex Viper

The new clickers aren't going to help click spacing. That is just a tradeoff in terms of clicks per turn versus click spacing. It would be nice to have the click spacing of the NXS in a single turn scope, but then your turrets would be the size of a dinner plate.

I think I will always prefer the feel of the NXS, but I prefer having fewer turns to having wider click spacing. No contradiction there... so I understand why someone might prefer a Nightforce F1 to a PH based on the turrets while I prefer PH for the exact same reason.

Re: Vortex Viper

I went ahead and ordered the Vortex Viper 6-20x50 today from Scott at Liberty Optics. He was great to talk with and recommended this scope to me for my set up and type of shooting. I'll try and post a range report once I get it. He had a great price on it and a $50 rebate too!

o, you'll like it alright

Re: Vortex Viper

I have the 6.5-20 50mm model with mil dot reticle. I really like the resettable turrets & the quality/features of the scope. To my eyes, the glass is very good but not quite up there with Nightforce NXS, Mark 4, etc. from a clarity & resolution standpoint. This is NOT a knock against the Viper, just that my eyes tell me that the optics are excellent but not quite up there with the "alpha" players in the tactical game. The Viper does represent an outstanding value however and is up to the task in 98% of situations the average shooter may face.

My $.02...

Thank you sir! Your scope is enroute. I appreciate your business.

Re: Vortex Viper

How does the 44mm objective version compare with the 50mm objective version? I'm wondering if the 44mm might be a little less bulky but if the 50mm is signifigantly brighter then it might be worth going bigger. How do they compare?

the 50mm should have slightly better performance but, I had the 44mm version and I hunted feral hogs here with no light other than a full moon

Re: Vortex Viper

Hey hunter223, I'm going to try hog hunting this weekend (full moon) and have been playing with my viper (6-20x50mm) and have been amazed how much you can see at night with that thing. Nearly each night this week I've gone out in the back yard and looked around the area. There are very few street lights around here so its pretty dark. My friend has a Leupold VX-III 50mm (3-9x I think) and can't see any where near the detail as the Viper in moon light. I may drag my wifes Vortex Diamondback 4-12 out with me and see how it does. I have been super impressed with that scope for the money. Bought from Scott too. Fantastic deal from him.
