Re: Vortex vs. Leupold MK 4

I'm gonna be wondering the same. I'll start by saying that I'm hoping the clarity will match the Leupold Mark 4s I'm planning to replace with the PST line. I also own a pair of Viper 8x42 binoculars, which is excellent.

My buddy recently mounted a Viper PA 6.5-20 and shot it over the weekend. I had my Mark 4 6.5-20 to compare it against. This was the first viper I had the chance to look through, I really had high hopes for it but I must admit I was quite disappointed in the glass.

In all power ranges, there was heavy distortion around the outer edges. My Mark 4 has distortion as well on the edges but it goes away at 8x and higher. For some reason I also could not get the target to focus at 100 yards. It was slightly blurry at all ranges while adjusting the side focus knob. Lastly, at matching magnifications, I did notice the scope wasn't as bright compared to the Mark 4.

Everything else about the Viper was top notch. The turret on the PA kicked the Mark 4's ass. Very crisp and tactile, dare I even say it was more crisp than my Nightforce NXS. The magnification ring was a bit stiff, but precise.

I learned the term "tunnel effect" on Optics Talk, it described what I experienced with my friend's Viper. I really have high hopes for the PST line, everything else about the PA Viper I fiddled with was fantastic. If the PST line matches the glass clarity, brightness and fixes the edge distortion I will be happily switch over to the Viper PST line.

I've been anticipating this line since it's been first announced. I eagerly await to hear everyone's review.

Please have your friend contact me asap. I don't believe any of us here have ever heard of a Vipers mag ring being "stiff". Also, you should of had no problem getting the scope to focus at any ranges. I think maybe your friend might have his front ring torqued down too tight or a bad set of rings and it is locking up the parallax and causing distortion around the edges and not letting it focus.

No matter what the cause please contact me and we will get this corrected for your friend.

My email is [email protected] .

My direct line is 800-426-0048 ext 323 or 608-836-0922

Thank you
Scott

I found this interesting. I have the Viper 6.5-20 and a Leupold VIII 6.5-20 and found just the opposite. To my eye the Vortex glass is the equal of the Leupold. However, I like the clicks on the Leupold a little better. That may be because I've made thousands of adjustments on the Leupold while Prairie Dog hunting and am used to it. My one complaint is a minor one. The reticule on the Vortex is a little thick for my needs. My bad in selecting the reticule as the literature gives this information. Since comparing the two scopes I put the Vortex on my primary Varmint gun (RRA 24" Varminter) and moved the Leupold to my back up Varminter (CZ527 Varminter). Both scopes are the same power, 30 mm tubes, life time warranty and meet my needs. I am pleased with both scopes. The Vortex cost 40% of what I paid for the Leupold. I will be buying more Vortex products before they become dominate in the market and their prices go up.

Re: Vortex vs. Leupold MK 4

Thank you Scott, I've responded to your PM. Fantastic service as expected.

Prairie Dog Dundee,
Interesting you mention the preference to your Mark 4's turret. I'm starting to think I hate the turrets on my Leupold after feeling the crisp clicks on my friend's Viper. I recently sent back a 4.5-14x Mark 4 to Leupold due to tracking issues, upon receiving it I compared it to my 6.5-20x Mark4. The turrets on my 4.5-14 Mark4 is much, much more distinct than my 6.5-20x Mk4, which has become very mushy and vague. I'm starting to wonder whether constant use wears on the distinct click of my turrets. My warranty Mark4 feels so much better with new parts compared to my 6.5-20x.

Black Majik

My Leupold is not a MK4 but a VIII (or VXIII). I have used it so much over the past 10 years that it feels "right". I don't know how many times I have taken it to the range but it has been on eight PD hunts where 1000 to 1500 rounds are fired and I do adjust the scope rather than "hold over". There is nothing wrong with the Vortex adjustments, they are crisp. As much as I've used the Leupold it is still crisp. I own Weaver. ACOG, B&L and Bushnell scopes but the next two scopes I will be geting will be Vortex Vipers with PST. Price, warranty, quality and features, whats not to like?

Re: Vortex vs. Leupold MK 4

Not to get off the topic here, but as Sam at Vortex just proved, thier customer service is Top Notch. I recently purchased a Vortex Spotting scope and the eye piece cap didnt fit, I emailed them questioning this and the reponse email was inquiring my address to get me a replacement. Unbelievable customer service has me not even questioning what my next scope is gonna be. I garuntee I will be donning a 6-24 Viper PST FFP on my 700P

Re: Vortex vs. Leupold MK 4

I shot my buddies 308 last weekend with a viper HD on it and if it wasn't 2000$ I'd proubly buy one. The viper was nice but I like my nighforce scopes. I don't range find with my scope so I don't care about FF plane. I think the viper HD is more of a 1500 scope than a 2000. But all in all its a very well made scope.
