I know VPN are a huge money maker.

Easy to set up - monthly revenue stream

Many log and sell your data.

Many who claim they don't track you, have provided data under subpoenas- so they obviously track

Nord and surfshark have the same owners

ExpressVPN - owned by Kape Tech - previously distributed malware

Hola VPN uses your network to route others traffic. So illegal stuff can be routed via your network.

Maybe Proton's VPN is better???

Do you trust a VPN with your data more than your ISP?

VPN providers might be able to provide you with some protection if your trying to circumvent things like porn bans and data collection, or torrenting things like music, movies, or ebooks. Treat it as fairly cheap insurance against low level snooping and inconveniences. If you are playing with things that an alphabet soup agency is likely to be interested in, a VPN isn't going to buy you any meaningful protection.

I currently use Mullvad and trust them far more than my local ISP.

I've used Proton. It worked, was slow.

TOR is fun. It's theoretically the most secure but it's also funded by donations. So there's a good change the alphabet agencies have bought a door there.

VPNs aren't the crazy security they're marketed as, and you as a user has to be diligent. Logging into your account here for example, would give them a trail to follow back and track anything you've done on that circuit/port.

Also, because of DOS attacks, most banking websites will kick you back if you are trying to log in. So you'll need to disable it to use certain services that are likely what you're concerned about.

This above. Its not going to stop a peer adversary.

Ive used mullvad almost since they started.

I am a little uneasy as I see advertisements for them in the DC metro so they've definitely gone main steam but I think they still are in the top with policy and options.

Porns the only real reason to get one.
