OLYMPIA — Washington allows you to own a firearms noise suppressor, or "silencer," but not to use it.Now the Legislature says you can.

The state Senate unanimously decided Tuesday to allow use of firearms suppressors. The chamber passed a bill introduced by Rep. Brian Blake, D-Aberdeen, that the House earlier approved 88-4.

"This allows the use of firearm noise suppressors in guns shops and on firing ranges," Sen. Cheryl Pflug, R-Maple Valley said, as long as the suppressor is legally registered under federal law.

This legislation could affect settlement discussions between Kitsap County and the Kitsap Rifle and Revolver Club over a county lawsuit that alleges that increased shooting and noise has created a public nuisance. The suit also alleges that the club did not obtain the proper permits to make major improvements to the range and that bullets have escaped the range property.

The trial is set for Aug. 9 if no settlement is reached.
