    Hello everyone,
Hope you're all having a great day. I hunt the woods of Pennsylvania, where the furthest ethical shot I would get would be around 200 yards. I would like to move up from my 308 and build a 458 SOCOM bolt action rifle. Any ideas of what I can and cant do? Also where I can source parts from. This is a project gun I would like to use to hunt deer maybe if I see one of those sneaky smelly dogs running around (coyote) pop one of them too. I have built many AR platform rifles 300 ham'r, 556, 458 socom 308. So any advice would be greatly appreciated. Do I buy an old rifle and try to retro fit it, like where do I begin? Sounds like it would be fun, maybe I'm just dreaming though.

I would check out the 458 socom forum.....they have a section on conversions.
I am a PA man myself and I also have a 458 socom in an ar platform that I bought because our state was going to pass semi automatics for large game but backed out in the 11th hour but I predict/hope they will reconsider in the next year or 2.

In my corner of the world, some are using .458 SOCOM on moose, using AR platform rifles. Typical distances are 75 meters or less, though. I think they choose .458 SOCOM over 450 Bushmaster because of the bigger and tougher bullets you can get in .458. Sorry, cannot help with technical details. I'm just sure it can be done. I guess you'd end up with a 45/70 in a smaller package.

I hope so too. If I have to I’ll go 450 bushmaster bolt action but damn do I love shooting and reloading the 458.

I think (don’t quote me) McGowen still makes barrels. There’s a local guy here in Nebraska with a Savage that’s been converted. I’ve not seen it in person, but the pictures make it out to be around 20” or so.

I’d be curious if a guy couldn’t get one of the Howa rifles that are AR mag fed and convert it...most 30 round mags are 9 round 458 mags.?
