Want to build a custom .338 winmag

Hi all,

I am brand new to this site and was told that everyone here is very helpful.

I have had guns since I was about 7, but don't really know much beyond how to clean them and how to pull the trigger. I would like to take up long-range shooting as a hobby and learn more about it. After discussing some options with my friends, I've decided on a .338 winmag for long-range shooting (not hunting, target only.)

I am not sure where to start. I'd like to build one by researching and purchasing each component separately to really have a custom rifle. I've heard that the Remington 700 action and the Saiko (sp?) actions are the best. I am assuming that a .338 is a long action, but I really don't know.

Can you please give me some advise on what I should look for in an action, and what other items I want to consider when building the gun. I would like to stay around the $2,500 mark all said and done, not including optics.

Any ideas, recommendations?

Thanks!!

Welcome to the site!

I don't know alot about the 338wm but what I do know is if you are wanting to go full custome you might have to open that pocket book a little more.

Good luck with your build, you have come to the right place for good info!

I think it is one of the most popular actions around. From what I've been told, this action has the most amount of aftermarket parts available. However, the Sako is also a top pic for the same reasons...or so I've been told...
