Hello,

Odd question here. Is there anyone near central Alabama that has a 4x32mm ACOG and or an SWFA 1-4/6 HD that I could play with.

I had the SWFA before and might purchase again, just need to test it again. Considering a used 1-4 HD also. Never have shot with an ACOG and am considering it as well with one of the PA reticles in it.

Will go out on a limb and ask to borrow the optic if you’re not local. We could work out some sort of “rental” agreement. For obvious reasons, I’d like to see if I could meet up somewhere and give them a test run.

Optic would be used on a 16” Recce type rifle if it is of any consideration. Basically wanting to get a feel for hoser shooting (sub 10 yards) and precision shooting (moa capability).

Anyways, PM/reply here or text at 205.242.sixeightfiveeight if possible.

Thanks,
- PBWalsh

In my experience, inside of 10 yards the 1-4 is going to win every time against the ACOG for both speed and accuracy. On paper the Bindon Aiming Concept sounds good when using the ACOG but it takes a fair bit of practice to train your eyes to superimpose the reticle over what you see with your left eye. This also creates a significant offset that will increase with range and generally rounds will be low right for right handed shooters. To put it in perspective, if you're shooting hammer pairs at an IPSC with a 1-4 set at 1X, just put the reticle in the A-Zone and you'll likely hit the A-Zone. Now, if you repeated that same drill using a 4X ACOG and BAC principle then if you "see" the reticle in the A-Zone, your impacts are likely to be C-Zone hits, combat effective but not ideal, especially compared to the capabilities of a modern LPVO.

This guy did a pretty good job illustrating what I just wrote.

Good luck.

Yeah I’ve rewatched his stuff a ton. I should say that an offset RMR will be used with either optic. Whatever LPVO/ACOG I put on the rifle will have a dedicated RMR paired with it.

I had the same question when deciding what to place on my sbr. I tried both, and went with the Acog with RMR. I shoot plates and paper with it. The SBR is a 7.5” Sig MCX in 5.56mm. I use light varmint grenade bullets due to short barrel’s loss of velocity. The Sig has a collapsible, side folding stock, since it is a piston gun. This setup is fast to engage short-range targets with head up using the RMR. I cannot even see the RMR if I have a cheekweld, as it is mounted too high. Head up, out to the 100 yard mark, quick and easy 1st-round hits are made much faster than when using a 1x-4x. I don’t get tunnel vision and I don’t worry about batteries with the RMR. At longer distances, or with more time, the Acog is quite advanced over the variable scope. The 200 and 300 hash marks are close enough to get hits on steel sized equivalent to a man’s chest. I strongly encourage purchasing the Green reticle model Acog, as the Red reticle Acog is troublesome as the red reticle washes out in daylight. Much like a laser pointer, the Green is easier to pick up and distinguish quickly. Good luck on your choice.

What mount for the ACOG are you using and what height is the RMR on top?

If I had an SBR, I’d definitely get the 1.5x16 mini ACOG. Being an accurate 16” rifle is why I’m considering an adjustable LPVO.

Trijicon 4x32 ACOG Dual Illuminated Riflescope and 3.25 MOA Red Dot Type 2 RMR Sight Kit (DI 5.56 Green Crosshair Reticle, Flat Dark Earth) is the model that I purchased from B&H Photo. The link shows a pic with the attached quick-release mount that comes mounted to it. I was leery, so I tried it out. It does indeed repeat to zero when removed and re-installed. The details mention a battery, but this is the dual-tritium model, so I guess they had a copy and paste from someone unknowledgeable about the product. If you want to know the RMR's height above bore, I'll get the SBR out of the safe today and measure it. The RMR is useless if my head is situated on the stock. It is a heads-up deal only, it is so high mounted.
The little 7.5" Sig shoots under an inch groups at 100 yards as-is. If I mount the ACOG on my Compass Lake 20" and shoot 77 grain SMK's, their trajectory matches up and zeroe's to the range graduations on the ACOG reticle. On a 16" barrel, I imagine it would do the same, or be close enough for govt work:cool:
