My local club has "scope rifle" matches with three different classifications - vintage, hunter/sporter, and unlimited. Max distance for the match (and the limit for ourl local range) is 600 yards. I've competed in these matches previously with my 1903A4 clone. Did quite well too. But, recently, I've gotten the itch to try something new.

I have a M1A Bush Rifle with the 18" barrel. I'd mounted the rifle in a Sage EBR stock but just wasn't happy with it overall. Then I had the opportunity to take a precision rifle class and really fell in love with the Remington 700P we were using. I think that's the direction I'd like to go now for a precision rifle set-up.

Money will be somewhat tight and it'll take time to finally get to where I want to be. From my research thus far I'm thinking of starting out with the Remington 700 SPS-AAC. I'll have a SWFA SS 5-20X when they finally ship and I've got a set of Badger low rings which sound like they'll work for this set up. Makes sense to stick with Badger and get the 20 MOA rail. Looks like a trigger upgrade would probably be in order at some point and the Timney 510 looks good. Any other options out there to really consider?

The last major upgrade would obviously be the stock. I guess it should be one of the first upgrades but again the money thing. Big ticket item. The 700P I used had the HS Precision stock which was fine. I may opt for something a bit more exciting and was considering a folding option. In the end, top of the price would probably be in the $700 to $800 range for a replacement stock.

I'd also like to upgrade to a detachable magazine as well. Any specific makers to stay away from? I did see the McRee stocks - they have a folding option have the detachable magazine feature built in. Seems like a possible way to go.

Looking forward to getting started. I'll be shopping in the next few weeks for the basic rifle.
