Is it as straight forward as removing the frame, spray and wash the grimy parts, wash warm in the machine and low heat dry?

I would hand scrub the dirty parts and let drip dry in the sun.
I don't think that tumbling around in a dryer would do your pack any favors.

When washing my external and internal packs I use dawn dishwashing liquid mixed with water in a bucket scrub with a rag or brush rinse with water let dry up side down out of the sun NEVER dry a pack in a dryer

I am a dish washing liquid, Simple Green, scrub brush, bucket w/hot water, garden hose, scrubbing in the driveway or on the deck and hang dry kind of guy with items like this.
It works for me.

Same as everyone above. I use Seventh Generation dish soap, biodegradable, nothing artificial, no scent, etc. For the inside, I fill it about 1/4-1/3 full water, add some soap, close the top and shake that shit for awhile, dump, rinse well with hose and hang dry.

+1 to all the above, and also I've done small packs in the washing machine.
Big +1 on Line Dry, I wouldn't mess with the dryer even on low heat.

I prefer to wash nylon gear by hand. I am not going to say I have never chucked 'deuce gear in the washer or dryer, but that was back when I could turn it in for a replacement if it fell apart.
For any of our gear I suggest hand washing.

Same as above, and if the pack has a waterproof coating you will need to watch how much scrubbing you do.
