I need a low budget waterproof case that my 32" barreled bolt gun will fit in.

It doesn't need to be super tough, it will just be used for gentle storage of the rifle in a very high humidity area where I live. It's practically jungle like. I wash clothes and put them out on the line in the sun. It's a crap shoot as to wether they will dry or get black mold!!

So anywho- What do ya recommend, low budget?

I have thought about bagging them, but want something a bit more substantial than that...

You really cant put cheap and reliable in the same sentence in this application. I have always thought highly of Storm Case when it came down to performance and price point. Pelican is good but they are more money for the same thing.

You could always go down and see what the local sports store has. Sportsmans Warehouse usually has some decent cases but they crank the prices up on you.

I understand and agree. But it's just gonna be used as a vapor barrier...with a handle on it. It's not gonna be air dropped, lugged to the range or bounce around on an ATV or in the back of the truck. It's just gonna sit in the corner in my shelter. keeping out humidity...with desiccant inside...

And as the man said. You can't have a cheap and reliable anything. Get a pelican or storm and that's that. Or risk finding your rifle covered in rust one day because your cheap vapor barrier failed.

Can you find a plastic bag that the rifle will fit into (55gal drum liner, etc.?) and close with a wire tie? There's your moisture barrier.

Now tuck it all into a case, soft or hard, and your mission is accomplished.

This is akin to how my Scout Troop used to do our on-river packing for canoe trips.

We'd line a sturdy pack/duffel/container with a drum liner, and wire tie the liner sealed. Everything would float high and dry if the canoe upended in rough water. All packages would be tied to the canoe with a short lanyard so it wouldn't get away when everything washed downstream.

This way, folks could worry about saving themselves instead of their possessions.

A vacuum sealer should work. Just get one that will handle the long rolls and rolls wide enough to get your rifle in. Trough a few silica bags in with and seal it up.

Or a heavy duty bag toss in some silica and double sided tape it shut. roll it down a bit and tape it some more.

I'd go with the food sealer. It's dual use. And you can pawn it off as a gift to the wife or girlfriend!

DIng ding ding!

Brilliant. I can get a sealable h20 proof gun bags
Put my riffle in it,drop in some dessicant,

throw in some Rust Blox Seal it up, and put it all in my standard hard case to protect the bag and I'm, good!

Thanks Greg, everyone.

Yeap a big plastic bag , I would put 2 cable ties on it in , as insurance .
Or maybe a cheap gn safe with a golden rod or closet heater ?

This^^^ if a plastic bag offends your sensibilities. Just make sure the seams are actually sealed, and that the screw plug(s)/cap(s) is/are gasketed.

When I seal a plastic bag with a tie, I use a long tie. First, I use the tie; then I fold the end back over the tie, and retie it with the long end.

All plastic bags are permeable to some small degree, but however permeable they may be, it's a bunch better than not using one. Our goods stayed bone dry during canoe trips despite plenty of "T-Rescues" below many rapids over the years. Nothing verifies waterproofing quite the way direct immersion will.

Moisture proofing fails by allowing the passage of air, which brings in the humidity with it. Block the air passage, and the moisture will pretty much stay out along with the air.

A rigid container generates airflow by resisting barimetric change, allowing failed seals to admit air. A flexible container is less prone to this manner of infiltration.

The less air there is in the container to begin with, the better.

Another strategy is to purge air with nitrogen, which does not absorb moisture.

Tres/mon; There is a product called Aloksak I believe that comes in several gun sizes. It is a "ziplock" style re-useable pre treated heavy duty plastic bag made for the purpose. several hundred schmoles down from a storm case and easier to store when seperated from the gun.
