Shit was probably worse during the time he speaks of.

I remember my Staff NCOs (mid 80s) seemed burnt out and they spoke of the early 70s/mid 70s time in the mil as being very hard.

We must of seemed like Boy Scouts to what they had experienced earlier in their careers.

I cant imagine how bizarre this must have been for Heinl being true Old Breed.

The trigger for many was the Army (1st hand knowledge here) was promoting do to race over ability an willingness. I had it happen to me an seen it over an over. That B/S was the trigger point that started other shit like FNG LT's that could not read a fucking map or had never been on a combat patrol let alone a ambush telling others how to do it, over guys with years of proven experience. Then some fucktard with tracks shows up fresh from never having been in the bush with live ammo an telling everyone how great they were in war college.
Lots of little shit started to add up for many, then add your buddy getting killed because of some fucked up B/S mission because west-trad wanted a body count, after awhile, fuck it all. Then add the weak that were on drugs, being egged on by those who wanted it done but, had no balls to do it their self. Fucked up times for some, an those times fucked up many in line units.

Edit to add another leading factor, taking the same dirt over an over, while the only net gain was more Americans killed for what? To prove a fucking point! Fuck Kennedy an motherfuck johnson. Then add guys like J.K. Singlaub getting reamed over doing too good of a Military job. Fucking cunt/asshole of a country back then, very much like these days. This drags old shit up for me, that to this day gets my BP fucking out of sight,...

Weird; its almost as if absolutely fuck all changed.
