Weight Preference for MDT Elite Chassis

I have an MDT Elite chassis and the Gray Ops external weight kit (2.5 lbs.) MDT also offers an under barrel/inside the chassis fore end weight that is approximately 2.5 lbs. I was thinking that weight below the barrel might be advantageous because of a lower center of gravity which might help the rifle settle into a bag better. Any one tried both and have an opinion?

I have ACC elite as well. Ran a full rail the MDT externals at first. Found them to be too bulky for my taste and feel.I switched to a full set of internals. They do feel better balanced in my setup Subjective maybe. Now I run the internals with one set of QD externals above my balance point for added mid-weight and a QD post for my OBi link.

My system was weighing about 25 lbs. total.

MDT ACC elite + 26" SS CRB Comp Contour barrel, full MDT internals, one set of externals + ACE brake + Razor Gen II 4.5-27(changing to a GEN 3) + SPUHR mount and bits and baubles that don't factor into the balance.

It settles perfectly and isn't too heavy for stages that will move me a lot.

It will make no difference for shootability, but like a previous poster said, the side weights add bulkiness if you use them close to the action. I prefer my Elite weighted as far forward as possible so it balances well while being as light as possible. I know a great shooter whose rail bag weight combo puts him at 35 lbs, but my life is too short to carry all that crap around.

I currently have a pair of externals way out front, along with the internal one-piece. I recently bumped up my barrel weight, though, so I look forward to removing the externals.

It’s not a big deal, but they do create a small opportunity to snag on stuff, most often the bag on the gun’s way out of a tight porthole.

Update FWIW -

I just shot my first 2-day PRS match. I had removed 1 of the 5 weights from over the CG of the rifle and ran one external near the muzzle end. It didn't feel right on day one. For my low skill level, it jumped a lot on recoil. I "crutched" it and borrowed 1 more set of externals placing 2 pairs near the end at it settled great. Had my first 2 cleans of this 1st year shooting! Small wins! Ran a 66 sec skills stage and got a 7 on it. All in at 26lbs. loaded.

I got home and added back the 1 internal above the cg and added a pair of externals like I did at the match. Went to practice and it felt good on stage but D.A.M.N, I Have to admit it is heavy moving from stage to stage. So a match with a lot of walking is going to test my 51 y/o stamina for sure. It wore me out in Alabama at that 2-day.

This weekend is our regional finale at K&M. This is likely my last points match of the season. Afterwards, I will break-in a new 1.25 straight, reduce and reconfigure some weights for balance and see how a lighter setup performs with my skill level. Hopefully she does well at 22-23lbs.
