Hey guys, had a range session today. Was shooting out to 100m today, very light wind right to left only about 1-2mph.
Shooting some cheap 30-06 federal powershocks 140gr, from prone.
My first two shots went into the same hole but my 3rd shot was low and left by about 1.5inches.
Reloaded mag, first two shots went into the same hole 3rd shot was low and left by 2 inches.
The wind had not changed if anything it had dropped to near nothing.
I had not doped for wind as my .223 prior was shooting fine and grouping 5 shots in 3/4moa. ( first shot my error and the rest bang on)
I called the first 2 shots spot on, the third was off each call.
I ran out of light to shoot another group to confirm.
I'm not sure if it was a recoil thing as I noticed myself tensing before the second shot, made the mental note to relax and relaxed. The third shot felt relaxed.
My follow through was good, I kept my cheek weld solid.
I did have some issues with the bipod "jumping" a fair bit, 4 out of the 6 shots I ended up looking two feet to the left off target after the shot.
I tried loading the bipod but that seemed to make it worse so just held tighter into my shoulder and it seemed to settle the shot.
Any ideas what could be producing the 3rd shot low and left?
Hot barrel? I was shooting about 30 seconds between shots...
Shoot, follow through, make note in data book of call, look through scope to confirm shot, mark data book actual shot position, reload, settle, fire, and repeat.

Re: Weird fliers...

As you said , you were shooting cheap ammo... Not to say it isn't necessarily you pullin the shots, but it's possible to be the ammo too. Sometimes I shoot the ten dollar a box American eagle 150gr 308, and that stuff is hit or miss as well. Most the groups are two bullets in one hole almost and the other almost an moa away. Other times I've had a .3 moa group with it, while other times I've had 1.7moa . Cheap ammo is cheap for a reason, it isn't measured as accurately, and like u noticed 1/3 can be wildly off.... I've noticed sometimes the difference between good and bad ammo isnt always linear in the way that it always shoots X more spread, but many times just has more fliers that are radically different

Re: Weird fliers...

As a wise man here on the hide said. If you have a flyer on the third round, just shoot a bunch of two shot groups.

Re: Weird fliers...

Thanks for the replies guys.I will be reloading fairly soon so when I do i'll do a comparison and see if i'm still getting the fliers.
@ the mechanic haha ,so long as my first shot is hitting target within 1moa i'm happy. The rifle is only ahunting rifle anyhow.

Re: Weird fliers...

I have had a couple of similar experiences with American Eagle that couldn't be replicated with Black Hills and others. I usually blame myself though.

Re: Weird fliers...

your flyers more then likely come from the ammo , the specific cause , could be anything , bullet , powder , tension , CC , you cant really isolate the problem considering your using factory ammo. If you reloaded you could try and isolate the issue.

but ya , + 1 bad ammo

Re: Weird fliers...

I almost stopped reading after "cheap 30-06"

Use some match ammo, if not you havent gotten around to reloading yet, and try again. That ammo may likely be your culprit but cant really tell until you have eliminated that variable.
