Hi, all. This morning I was watching the Outdoor Chanel. Western Extremes came on, & they did a piece on hunting Whitetail deer with a .50 BMG @ 1000yds. on an Indian res in the Dakotas. I was not impressed. Once he called the rifle a 50mm... I'd love to see him shoot one of those off a bi-pod. Then they said they were using the 760gr. A-Max. Didn't know they made one. Then the 1st. shot was missed.(luckily it was a clean miss) & they blamed it on the scope being off "a couple clicks right." This was after they spent the morning sighting in the rifle.
Now maybe the guy really is a experienced long range marksman, & he just came off like he didn't know what he was doing. I still don't think that show was in good taste. If it was edited to give the "real" experienced long range marksman the impression that they knew what they were doing It would be OK with me, but to show it as it was aired, it just gave me a bad feeling, & promoted questionable ethics.
Of course this is MY Opinion, & others may feel differently.

Hunting on that paticular Indian Reservation with a .50 BMG may be illegal anyway.. That is unless one is a native Indian not white, to that paticulal reservation. Example, I,m a member of the Navajo tribe. My wife is a Piute living on the Piute Indian Reservation. I work on the Navajo Indian Reservation, but live on the Piute Indian Reservation. State of Utah declared that I am not native to this Piute Indian. Therefore I am classed withbeing foreign to this reservation and had to cough up ten thousand dollars for back state taxes and am currently paying Utah State taxes. The state is able to cover its power over all non-native persons and business non- native. With this in mind ,hunting with a .50 BMG with a white person, with the state laws says not to hunt with a .50, would be in question.

To the OP, yeah I know what you mean. The guy that hosts that show albeit an agressive hunter is usually pretty good, fair chase, etc. This entire hunt/episode seemed to revolve around the 1000 yd. kill and the big 50 as a novelty. To give them credit, they could have edited out their screw ups but presented a somewhat honest account of the hunt. When he connected, the BMG sure did the job though.

I wouldn't expect anything else from a .50 BMG. Deer aren't hard to kill. They showed the entry side, but not the exit side. I'll bet , if it hit a bone going in the off side is mostly gone. I also wonder if any other misses were edited out. I'd be furious if they wounded even 1 animal to do that show. I don't particularly like Best of the West either, for the apparent ethics thing, but at least they show them using a wind meter, etc. & the attention to the details of the shot before they fire. This show appeared to be an advertisement to everyone to go buy a .50, & start shooting deer @ 1000 yds.

Saw the show... it was ok... he kept saying South Dakota, South Dakota, then it was North Dakota, North Dakota... he was on the Standing Rock Reservation which extends into North and South Dakota so maybe he was on the border... who knows.... He definatley didnt shoot a 'monster' he was after... just a little 2x2 or 2x3 ... His first shot (miss) appeared that he shot right over it and not to the right like he mentioned... whatever.... it was sort of entertaining ...

I still think it was illegal for a white man to shoot with a .50 BMG even though he was on the Reservation.... Im sure it is legal for the native people to shoot with a .50 BMG but didnt think it was legal for the host to shoot... i dont know the exact rules of the reservation either... ???

    Re: Western Extremes T.V. Show.

trust me the rules and regs on the res... totally different, i'm a mile from the rez, we got deeded land that borders rez, and if you get caught or don't know the rules/regs, not good, i can shoot pdogs on my side of the fence but as soon as i reach across its a federal offense i'm told, also no hunting suppressed (on rez), hell i cant carry a gun on tribal ground during tribal hunting season to get to my (deeded) land, unless i have a tribal permit i'm told, bull*%^*!!! anyways western extremes...eh... best of the west has some legit 600-900+ kills, got it tivo'd, good watch.
