I have a budget of $1500 to spend on a rifle (.300 WM). It will be used primarly for target shooting (mostly <600yd.) and for the occasional deer. I am thinking a hunting style rifle would be best as I really can't see myself hauling around a 13+ lb. tactical rifle when hunting. I am planning to put a NF 3.5-15 on it. Here is a short list of rifles I've been considering (been leaning towards the Sako):

Steyr pro hunter
Sako 85
CZ 550
Savage with accustock and accutrigger
Kimber

Hey I picked up a Remington 700 5r in 300 winmag. It is about 900 and I found it at an online auction site. So far this thing has been great for me. I am using it for exactly what you described except for hunting elk once a year. My buddy has the savage with the accutrigger in 300 winmag. I really enjoy his rifle also.

Remington 700 5-R milspec all the way. I just had mine out this past friday and saturday and I'm really loving this rifle. I shot 100 yards with it on friday and my 3 shot group measured .498" center to center. Saturday I shot 300 yards with it and the 4 shot group was 1.497" center to center. The load was 76gr. of H-1000, 208 A-max, RWS brass, Fed 215M primers seated to 3.606"

That thing sounds like it is shooting well.Maybe Remington is starting to feel the heat and stepping up their game.I am a fan of any gun that shoots good.
