Hey guys. I have been shooting the living crap out of my Reminton 700 sps sporter and I am learning so much. I am researching changing the barrel now as my gunsmith is willing to cut me a deal on the barrel that is on my gun currently. I want to ask you guys a quick question. For 800-1000 meters max. What barrel contour do I need to buy for my gun. Note, that we are talking about .308 here and I will be going with 24 inches in length. I noticed mike rock has an m24 contour and shilen barrels have there own contours also. So what give? Which contour is best for 800 meters and maybe 1000 meters if I ever find a range that long. Once I buy the barrel I will call hs precision and order the stock for that barrel contour. Thanks dudes.

You don't need more than a #6 or a Tubb contour.

A 6 contour or rem varmint contour will be fine unless you have a special reason why you would want a heavier rifle

So an m24 barrel measures .900" at the muzzle and that barrel is from mike rock. The shilen barrels im looking at that are comparable contours is the #7 standard varmint that measures .890" at the muzzle. The # 6 is .750" at the muzzle. Is there going to be a great accuracy difference between a number 6 and 7 contour? If so, why? Also, why would someone want a heavier barrel?

No, there will not be an accuracy difference with the exception of rapid firing. When a barrel is cool (as to the touch) the accuracy does not change. however, as a barrel heats up, the accuracy can wane. But, with most normal civilian rifles including comp rifles, a #6 is fine. It won't (normally) heat up to the point of accuracy waning.
Now for a combat rifle, read military, that may be a different story. Also, weight plays a roll in recoil reduction. Some like the look of a heavier barrel.

Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it. I am one of those that really likes the heavy barrel look. Perhaps I should just buy an unturned barrel and have the gun smith turn it to fit the hs precision stock perfectly

Do yourself a favor, get the Mike Rock with 5R riffling, no more than 20in long, with either the M24 contour or heavier if you want.

Well I run a MTU 24" in a AI Chassis. Mine is a full blown HOG!

To add validity to what Mike said here... (as if he needed any
) I have a #5 on my 300WM. It is a little on the short side at 22" burning slower powder, but I have on rare occasion put 10 round strings through as fast as I can single feed (barrel was so hot I couldn't touch it) with no discernable POI change (no more inaccurate than slow fire).
But if I was running a longer barrel I would go to a #6, Med. Palma, or Rem. Varmint or such... I don't see the point of attaching a truck axle to the front of my action if not needed.
