I'm about to order a barrel for my first barrel swap for my savage 10FP. I decided on .338 Edge because I think thats a solid caliber for 600-800 yard big game hunting. I thought about a drop in Shilen barrel and adding a muzzle brake but looked at Lawtons website for info on their barrels and they offer a cheytac brake or their own brake, which is suppose to be really effective. I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks

Re: What barrel for .338 Edge?

The short action on the 10FP may make the 338 Edge difficult to hunt with as you will need to shoot it single shot and remove the bolt to remove loaded rounds. I do not worry about single shots for shooting up to 400 yards but after that I am not that comfortable with my ability to read the wind to limit myself to one-shot.

Re: What barrel for .338 Edge?

I had a good experience with a Pac-Nor in my 338 Edge. Mine is on a Remington but they will make you a Savage pre-fit no trouble. The lead time was about 8 weeks for me. If I were doing what you're doing, I'd get a 1:9.5 twist and as long as you can stand for the 338 Edge.

I have a Shilen match select on one of my 308's and its a good barrel too, either maker is fine for a button rifled barrel and the finish inside and out was good for both barrels.

No personal experience with the others.

Re: What barrel for .338 Edge?

I've seen that shilen and pac-nor have the drop in barrels but I believe those are 26 0r 28in length and can't get the 1:9.5 twist. I'm wanting the 1:9.5 twist like your suggesting and 30in barrel so I get velocity with less powder. I was hoping someone could give me some thoughts on Lawton barrel and brake.

Re: What barrel for .338 Edge?

I was looking at the action earlier and Im having second thoughts with the short action and may keep the .308 since I'm very happy with it and go to academy and get a $300 long action savage rifle to build on.

Re: What barrel for .338 Edge?

I've built two 338 Edge's on Savage actions. I had Sin Arms do both barrels. One was a Sin Arms barrel that Devin sourced, the other was a McGowan was one I bought and had sent to Devin.

I had Devin thread, chamber, and fit RWS muzzle brakes on both of them.

They both shoot great. Here is the 32" Fluted in a Stockade stock. It's built on a long/short action.

Call Pac-Nor up and they will make you one, they charge a little extra for the longer length but its worth the $11 / inch for what you get. They don't have any problem making a 9.5 twist barrel either, that's what mine is.

Re: What barrel for .338 Edge?

I got a Rockcreek 31" They said 11 weeks and it showed in 8 This was at the beginning of 2010. Its a 9.3 and shoots the 300gr great. I have seen Sinarms work and it is nice.
Are you thinks single shot? The Savage mag box isnt long enough with out moding it. I built a repeater on a Lawton 7000 action w/ an ext box and if I were to do it again would go single shot and throated for the big bullets. There is a bunch of bullet in the case when seated to fit the mag box. I love mine but is 600-800 is you goal there may be better cartridges to look at 7wsm comes to mind. Good luck. Eric
