I have an FN SPR coming and need a recommendation for a 20 MOA base. Am looking for a base that will extend about a half inch to inch beyond front bridge. Also your recommendation for which vendor. Best value?

    Re: What base ?

I'm in the same boat (except mine is a M70 I already have). I ordered a Badger, but am now thinking it would be nice to lighten up with a Seekins 20 MOA and also use Seekins rings.

Definitely interested in what others have to say.

    Re: What base ?

This post should probably be in the Optics Forum, but since you asked here: Seekins Precision. Glen makes 0, 20 and 30 MOA for most Winchesters, his workmanship is first rate, and they do extend over the front of the action. His prices are more than reasonable, in the $99 to $110 range.

Not a thing wrong with Badger bases as well, except they cost a bit more.

Hard to go wrong with those two makers.

    Re: What base ?

If you are getting a FN SPR.... they SHOULD come with a 20 MOA base already installed....

Also.. on the Winchesters.... be carefull when ordering.... you MAY want to give them the hole measurements... as there are about 5 different base patterns for Winchester S/A recievers..

DONT ask me how I know.

    Re: What base ?

MM128, thanks for the cautionary note. This SPR is the first series and I don't believe they came with a base. In any case, I know this one is without. I have also heard that later series have a different port that will accept WSM whereas the first series will not. The footprint of both types is supposed to be the same. Do you know whether the mount holes vary on the FN (Winchester) actions?

Not to my mind, but many folks are very happy with EGW bases.

    YMMV,

    Re: What base ?

Yes they do vary to my knowledge...

I am in the similar situation... I ordered one from US Optics that was coded for my specific rifle/action... but was NOT the same... the hole patterns vary sooo much on them..

Best thing to do is measure the holes on the reciever... then let the place your ordering it from know so your NOT going through what I am...

    Re: What base ?

Matt, will follow your advice. Rifle should come in this week and I'll wait to measure before I order.

Bob, there is only about fifty bucks difference between the two but this still makes one twice as much as the other. I take it you see this as well spent money?

The base will last as long as the rifle lasts. You will never have to buy another for that rifle as long as you own it. You can pass that rifle and base on to your children and grand children.

No need to ever upgrade, because you already bought one of the best in the first place. A small price to pay for $50. extra bucks for a quality base, IMHO.

When you are talking for example about rifle stocks or Optics, the difference between "just serviceable" and "the best quality" can be measured in hundreds for stocks; in scopes, thousands of dollars.

But with bases and rings, the delta between serviceable and "best quality" is a mere pittance compared to the total cost of a tactical rifle.

    Just my opinion,

    Bob
