What bolt action .308 for suppressor?

I am waiting on a new YHM Ti suppressor and am trying to decide on a bolt action .308 for subsonic ammo to use for hunting when Texas makes it legal. I am looking for a short, lightweight rifle that is threaded. Any recommendations?

Re: What bolt action .308 for suppressor?

whats your price point? you looking for off the self or custom gun? you can pick up a new remmy 700 or savage either pre-threaded or send it out to get threaded and be less than a grand, or you can go the full cock custom route for a couple thousand or more. with a hopeful price cap people can help you out a bit more.

That said I just picked up a Savage 10-fp for 640 new. the fp-sr which is threaded from the factory was 670. mind you that is new from a small local gunshop that normally marks things up a bit more than most people here seem to find stuff.

Re: What bolt action .308 for suppressor?

I have looked at the Rem 700 SPS Tactical AAC and Ruger GSR in person and have looked at specs on Tikka T3 MT, Savage Axis SR.

I would like to buy off the shelf and stay shorter than 40" because the suppressor adds 8+"

Texas is going to legalize game hunting with suppressors and I will be woking on whitetail does on the lease in S.Texas.

Re: What bolt action .308 for suppressor?

find a stevens 200 in 308, it is a savage action. buy a barrel from a vendor and have it cut to 18 or 20 and threaded. get a decent stock and optics and your set minus your can of choice. Savage barrels go around 300 trimmed and threaded at least the places I have looked... or you could send your stock stevens barrel out to be threaded and trimmed. get a stock from Boyds for 200, plus the cost of the rifle of 400 and there your basic boomstick is about 900 +/-.

oh and I would avoid the savage axis... not many good reviews of it. I looked at it before getting my 10-fp and just didnt like it.

Re: What bolt action .308 for suppressor?

Why the sub-sonic ammo?
Your range will be very limited as will energy.

For your intentions I would recommend either the SPS Tactical + a new stock, Howa 20" HB, have it threaded + new stock or one of several threaded savage models.

I would not consider the axis just because I am not that into rifles that can't be upgraded and have plastic parts.

Re: What bolt action .308 for suppressor?

Sub-sonic takes the crack out of the shot making the shots quieter and multiple shots possible. Bolt action to allow use of the sub-sonic because sub-sonic won't cycle my LR308. Want a light and short rifle because the YHM adds 15 oz and 8+ in.

Re: What bolt action .308 for suppressor?

I understand the physics of the sub-sonic ammo.

Velocity will be so low that you will not get expansion with any .30 cal hunting bullet.

You MIGHT be able to stabilize a 240 grain bullet in the SPS tactical 1-10 twist, but more than likely the 208 AMAX is about as heavy as you can go.

To me, you should respect the game you are shooting and insure a quick clean kill.

If you insist on sub-sonics, keep your shots extremely close. I don't believe that it is worth the time and effort.

Re: What bolt action .308 for suppressor?

I'd go Remington AAC for sure. I picked mine up locally for $619 and it's a hammer. You can pay a lot more for a rifle that does a little better. It seems to me the AAC fits what you need perfectly.

Re: What bolt action .308 for suppressor?

Super sonic ammo, deer are stupid I've shot a buck and dropped him, while three does were sniffing at him like dude get up. If its a field type shooting the only run short distance and stop. Super sonic ammo and a suppressor would be just as easy to kill animals with and not cause them to go nuts.

Re: What bolt action .308 for suppressor?

Im looking for a similar set up (though not for subsonic rounds). The Black Ops ranch rifle looks pretty cool for a shorter light weight custom 308, Any one here familiar with it?

This is very true, unless you hit them between the eyes your gonna see alot of run off deer.

Re: What bolt action .308 for suppressor?

Does the AAC seem unbalanced to you? I am afraid when I add 15oz suppressor on the barrel it will be even more so.

Re: What bolt action .308 for suppressor?

I have some HSM 175gr HGBT subsonic that I am going to try. The deer are a little gunshy on our place after we shot 75 this past year.

Re: What bolt action .308 for suppressor?

Both the Savage 10PC and Remmy 700 AAC come pre-threaded; both are great rifles with 20in. barrels. I prefer the 10PC, but I am an unashamed Savage fanboy.

Re: What bolt action .308 for suppressor?

Doesn't seem unbalanced to me. But I'm sure a different stock would help with the added muzzle weight of a suppressor. Stock change with that rifle is a must even without a suppressor.

Have you ever shot a suppressed rifle? Almost all of them are nose heavy, so they are almost all gonna feel unbalanced.

I have 308 SS both Lapua and hand loads. I have shot a fox at a range of 10 feet in a 'special situation' - terminal ballistics are awful. My conclusion from that experience is that if something is going to get shot it needs a supersonic bullet or a guaranteed shot to the central nervous system. The latter shot should not be underestimated with the rainbow ballistics.

My original (naive) intention was to use it to shoot deer, I now realise I would spend most of my time chasing wounded animals over the hills.

Not always...I bought my Savage PC a few months back and it is not threaded. Maybe its last years model or something, IDK.
