I just got my Savage Model 10 BA in .308 24" barrel with a 1 and 10" twist rate, In everyone's experience what seems to be a good weight of bullet for the length and twist rate. I am mostly going to shoot paper and steel out to about 1000yrd and in. thanks in advance

Re: What bullet for 24'' barrel

I have heard from others not on the hide but at a local gun shop I should not go over 168gr with my twist rate is there any logic behind that or is it just him giving his opinion. and is there a scale or chart somewhere showing optimum bullet size to length and twist rate or is it just trial and see what fly's best.

Re: What bullet for 24'' barrel

That is indeed Hogwash.. 1:10 twist is optimal all the way up to the 185s and beyond. The twist is suited for 168gr and up i would imagine, but it can't hurt to try everything. I have a load that is about .5 MOA with 155gr scenars and my twist is 11.25.

It's worse, it's him exposing that he is going FULL RETARD!!

Find a new gun shop, with someone that has actually shot a rifle working there. With a 1-10" twist you can EASILY shoot 208 amax's and even go heavier. Guys are shooting the 208 amax's in the 1-12" twist Remington barrels.

WoW !! How do these dumbass' stay employed?

Re: What bullet for 24'' barrel

A 1:10 twist will shoot stabilize 200gr bullets all day long where I shoot (5000 ft asl). Will stabilize 155 - 190gr bullets everywhere else on the planet. As stated earlier see which one your gun likes.

They don't know shit from shinola.

You need to experiment to find the load that your rifle likes best. There is no hard and fast rule, just recommendations based on experience and you have received good ones here already so I won't be redundant.

Not yet but I am looking in to getting started soon. I have a.308 and a 6.8spc AR and ammo prices for just those are getting me interested in wanting to reload. I just need to research and get familiar with it befor I get started.
