what caliber for long action?

Re: what caliber for long action?

300 Win. as stated with the 208 A-Max or a 210 Berger. This with some RWS brass makes for a solid platform and easy to reload for. If your not a reloader there is good factory ammo for it too.

Re: what caliber for long action?

Standard bolt face, 7mm: 280 Rem, 7mm-06, 7mm/270 (you get the idea for 7's) shooting a 162 Amax, 168 Berger, 175 SMK or 180 Berger VLD or VLD Hybrid.

Std face, 30 Cal: 30-06 with 208 Amax or 210 VLD's

Std face, 6.5mm: 6.5-284, 6.5x57, 6.5x55, 6.5-06 (not in any particular order, but I have a soft spot for the 06 case as a parent chambering). Load them long with a 140 Berger or a 130 or 140 JLK

Mag bolt face... yeah, anything in 6.5, 7, 30 cal using the bullets mentioned above.

I really don't think that a long action magnum is necessary for hitting paper and steel using a 6.5 or 7mm bullet. I think that a long action case is necessary in either Std or mag bolt face for 30 cal.

Re: what caliber for long action?

I have one and love it 284 that is i push the 162amax at 3030fps with rl17. it works really well out of the aics 300win mag magazines. The 280ai is a good alternative also but the 284 works better our of the aics mags because it is wider.

How far have you shot it?

Re: what caliber for long action?

I have shot mine out to 1050 it is a laser it will make 1500 easy. I had a first round hit on a steel plate that was 12"x8" followed by 2 more out of the next 5 shots. I was very proud that day.

Re: what caliber for long action?

Ok so i am narrowing my choice to:
6.5x284, 280 Rem and 284 winch with standard bolt face
7RM, 300WM, 338RUM and 338 Edge with magnum bolt face.

What about barrel life then?

Re: what caliber for long action?

No magnum: 284.- shoots as flat if not better than the 6.5-284, and longwr barrel life, with the 162 amax. 168 or 180 berger will outshoot the 6,5-284 past 700 m.

Magnum: 7wsm, or 7 rm.Same bullet choice.

Lower recoil, less barrel life than 284: 6,5-284, lower bc bullets also

Re: what caliber for long action?

At 1500 yards, I like to have lots of energy down range so I can clearly hear the "ding!" or "gong!" and know if I hit or not. In addition, just a little, unstable wind will mess with your day out there. I'd go with 338 Edge and 300 Scenar/SMK.

300 RUM is a great round. Throwing a 208 Amax at 2900FPS will do what ever you want it to at 1500.

Could even go for a .30-378 weatherby mag. (208 Amax at 3100)

You should get a fair bit more than 2900 from a 208 Amax out of a 300 RUM, I get 2875 from my 30-06 with 208's. I know the chrono's not wrong either since the dope matches to 675 without a hiccup.

300 RUM should be more along 3150-3200 with them.

Re: what caliber for long action?

284 Win is great but as you have a 260 i would step it up and go to a 7mm Rem Mag or either of the 7mm Short mags i prefer the Rem SAUM as it is better balanced in 7mm and can achieve nearly exact velocities with 5gr less powder if you run the numbers on the 300 win mag using 208's then the 7mm rem mag with 180's at 1500 yards the 7mm rem mag actualy has more energy retained you have to step up to the ultramag to equil the 7mm mags. so it would be a 7mm mag or step up to a 338 edge but that is another stepup and if you want to go all the way that is a great option but a 7mm mag will get you past a mile with less recoil and they are awsome to shoot.

If you dont mind me asking what powder and primers are you using for the RUM? (sorry for thread drift.)

Re: what caliber for long action?

A lot of good calibers have been suggested all of them will work. I like 280AI, 6.5-284, 300rum, when i get a chance to shoot lately the freaking wind is blowing 30 mph but it still beats working.

Re: what caliber for long action?

I too have a RUM and it works very well even with lighter bullets than the 208 Amax.

Shoot, go with a 338 of some sort if you have the budget and the shoulder to support it.
