Going to be rebarreling my Rem 700 currently chambered in 204, and I want your suggestions of what caliber will be next. Right now I am trying to decide between 300 whisper or 223 ai but I am open to any other suggestions. The 204 right now is setup with a manners t4 stock and badger DBM with the new 10 round AICS mags, and topped with a nightforce 3.5-15x50. I do reload and the other rifles I have are an ar15 with two uppers chambered in 223 and 6.5 grendel, and a DTA SRS in 6.5x47 Lapua (I do plan on getting a second barrel for the DTA either in 300rum or 338 lapua, but I am still learning long range with the 6.5 lapua). I am also waiting on paperwork for my yhm phantom suppressor 7.62 QD that will be used on all.

Open to any suggestions and by the way thanks to all the members here on the hide. I have learned a lot in the last year, reading all the good info this forum.

What don't you like about the 204? What i mean is,why not just fit it with a new tube chambered in 204.

You seem to have a good stable already. But i'd go with a 223AI.

Re: What caliber next? 223 bolt face

I'd do the Whisper if I did not have a need for a precision varmint rifle, i.e. prairie dogs, etc.

I have both a 223AI and a 300whisper. The 300 is fun but the 223 gets shot a lot more.

    204 for shooting rodents.
    223 AI otherwise.
No experience with the 300 whisper so you might want to take the advice above.

Re: What caliber next? 223 bolt face

I myself am leaning more towards the whisper build because they are very unique, super quiet when subsonic and suppressed, and I am pretty sure I would be the only one in my area that would have one. Also my sub moa 6.5 grendel shooting 123's is very similar ballisticly to a 223 ai shooting the 75 amax's. But I agree the 223 ai is a more versatile caliber and would get used more, and the other option to rebarrel to another 204. Well lets just say I like the high bc bullets (the wind never stops blowing in Nebraska).

Man I am stuck between the two

    300 Whisper.
Suppressed rifles are always cool, and 300 whisper is damn silent
You can always do another 223 build afterwords, but 300 whisper would be more gratifying in the short term

Do it for the Shiggles, and be done with it

I'd go with a .223 also, sure the whisper is cool, but you can do all that with a tight twist .308 and still shoot supersonic stuff too. and like said above, you'll probably shoot it more.

Re: What caliber next? 223 bolt face

Order barrels for .223 and .308 and have your gunsmith pin the recoil lug. Have him fit the barrels to your action, chamber them for 300 whisper and .223AI.

With a barrel vise and an action wrench, you will have a .204, a .223 (or .223AI) and a 300 whisper, all in the same stock. (stocks worth having are expensive, man !)

Quick change, no. Interchangeable, yes. All with the same cheek weld, scope, trigger pull, length of pull, etc.

    6 x 45mm
You can use .223 cases and just open them up a bit with an expander ball & graphite or lube. Cost effective round that cheats the wind better than a .223.

Contact Mark Chanlynn at Bighorn Arms, he's been shooting this round since the mid-70's.

Deuce/.222Rem. Accurate as the day is long. Better in the wind than the sub-.20's, probably more effective range on 'Chucks, too.
