Snow which is always present in Calgary and North of Calgary

The structure in the distance is a tall TOWER and dish antennas have very narrow beamwidths so that isn't the cause.

I have to admit that I don't know what I don't see

The wireless key fob carrier frequencies, currently 315MHz in the US/Japan and 433.92MHz in Europe.

That's a pretty low frequency in the grand scheme of modern data communications. Way below CDMA, GSM or LTE.

Most likely a noisy transformer somewhere most likely. You get all sorts of crazy frequencies out of those.
 
You know what, this piqued my interest enough to hop on google maps. The photo in the article is from 2016 and was ripped from a street view car.

What I don't see is anything from 2019.

He (in the article) is on the right track. Your going to see more an more of this as time goes on. A spectrum analyzer with a Yagi antenna will lead you right to the, way out of balance phase that could be resonating at different freqs. There are no power lines on that side of the street so my guess is they are underground, which means they could be old an encased in lead shielding, which can be problematic over time. Other Offending device's like cameras, video an microphones, lights ect will do this as well. I had a CFL in the back room that would shut down my radios power supply when it was turned on, but only when the temp in that room was < 65*f If the lamp was warmer than that from being on or the room being warmer it was a none issue.
Now what info from this can be gleaned for down the road when it all gets real? Those who think electronics are the worlds salvation will rethink that in years to come. The shit coming for China is known in many circles for this, an it is not by design, except for the fact dissection proves some circuits were designed in very interesting ways with component's that are not required to operate that part of the circuit. By chance you say, may be they are that stupid, but I don't think so.
 
Most keyfob/receivers used for keyless entry systems are not anywhere near the frequencies used on microwave towers or cell phones.
Some use two way query to verify the proper fob is trying to access the receiver.
Some systems are 'Smart' and won't even start if the proper fob answer signal is received. That's a No-Start for a blocked fob signal.

To address this issue let's look at the 'fob not working' issue.
If a fob doesn't work it is likely being blocked, but not from the tower. The energy level required for an out-of -band signal from a few hundred yards to override a fob signal 10 feet away would cause all kinds of problems. Like growing extra arms kinds of problems :) I would look at in band sources first.

A sparking AC power line connection is wide band. That's how radio got started. Sparks.

Then I would look at the models of vehicles effected. To have the receiver (which shouldn't draw enough power to drain a battery overnight) enable systems in the auto that COULD drain the battery shows the system isn't really secure. It could be a poorly designed system such as poor shielding of receiver circuits to extraneous signals to real life hacking.

Running a test at night when the problem happens during the day might not find the problem.
Maybe the Chinese planted a miniature EMP device in the center of the parking lot and only turn it on in the middle of the night but unless systems turned on in the vehicle a 80 to 100 amp/hr battery would have to have more than dashlights on to drain overnight, much less than a day trip to the store.

I would take an effected vehicle model, one without remote start, or two way transponder keys, or On-Star (or similar), confirm the keyless entry system works well in the wild, and monitor receiver output for an enable signal when parked in the store lot.
A dealer spare reciever, battery and fob could be put in the open to see what happens.
I would also monitor battery current drain to see if systems are turning on by themselves. RFI can impact computer controlled signals even without the key less entry system turning them on. If the car battery drains (not just the keyfob not working) it's not EMP, EMI, RFI, or the Chinese.
Lead acid batteries are too stupid to respond to signals that wouldn't also fry people.

This is a media hype story that has overlooked some details, and tossed in some 'Fake News'.
Sure it's happening, but just like a shooting story, getting good witnesses is key to solving the key fob problem.

Several of you guys are correct. Arc lamps that use high voltage starter circuits, like Sodium-Arc and Halogen headlights, can create an interference field. Does this happen in the parking lot during the day? Insulation breakdown of the Mains power nearby could create a random interference.

Finding related stories may not help with this specific situation. There are many instances of electronics not working with interfering background radiation.

The frequency used by some car manufacturers can be close to amateur or civil repeaters, and Beofang uhf radios, cheap 433 mhz transmitters used for radio control.
Do Japanese cars use 433mhz keyfobs in Canada?
If not they use the 315mhz band.

If you wanted to disrupt a lot of keyfobs (totally illegal) for fun then $5 low power transmitter modules for 315mhz or 434 mhz might do the trick.
