What does loading the bipod mean?

Re: What does loading the bipod mean?

Pretty much positioning yourself fundamentally and correctly behind the bipod with proper amount of pressure between your shoulder and the stock. Which in turn controls recoil, helps retain sight picture, and keeps the bipod from "hopping"

Re: What does loading the bipod mean?

I have found that it is very difficult to apply pressure to the bipod when shooting off of a bench, does anyone has any suggestions on how to correct this?

do a search in the basic fundamentals forum. Also, there is a youtube video of by Lowlight explaining your very question.

Lowlight did a video on this topic a while back, not sure if it requires Online Training to access it or not. Simply put... You address the rifle on the bench just like when shooting prone.. Straight back behind the rifle, not from the side as I had always shot from a bench. Shoulders square, perpindicular to the barrel.

Re: What does loading the bipod mean?

I did watch a video about that, my problem is that the feet on the bipod slide forward when you apply any weight, I have been thinking of attaching a piece of 2x4 to the front of the bench to act as a stop. We will see if that works.

Yeah stop shooting off of a bench

I understand if your range has restrictions on going prone if thats the case put down a heavy sandbag or make a platform with an edge to push against. A section of deep pile reminant carpeting can help as well but it needs to be some of that shaggy 70's looking stuff.

Seriously if you are not restricted from doing so, prone is a better position for bipod shooting YMMV.

Re: What does loading the bipod mean?

What kind of bipod and bench surface? Rubber feet on the bipod? You can always put a towel on the bench which will give the bipod feet more of a surface to grip. My shooting mat has a strip of nylon webbing that you slide the bipod feet against to get a better hold.

Re: What does loading the bipod mean?

Most bipod legs fold forward, away from the receiver; therefore, when the rifle recoils, it has a tendency to make the legs go into the folded position.

It is prudent to put some forward pressure on the butt of the rifle to generate an offsetting force to the recoil of the rifle upon discharge, among other reasons.
