What have I got myself in to?

It's such an expensive pain getting an FFL to do a transfer on an internet ordered gun in California that I did the smart thing and added on a bunch of Labor Day sale Aero Precision M5E1 and M4E1 lowers to my ARC Nucleus order to stock up and give a few uppers dedicated lowers instead of having to mix and match.

I wound up spending a couple hours getting about 2.5 lowers together, testing triggers and checking upper to lower fit.

The uppers I had are mostly matching Aero enhanced uppers with the inverted barrel nut and matching handguards.

The upper to lower fit on the matching combos seems very good. I was ready to use oversize pins and ream the holes to fit but the stock pins gave it a fit that doesn't have enough wobble to complain about and there is an extra screw to push up on the upper receiver rear takedown pin boss to remove slop that way. If it ever becomes an issue, I can tighten it that way.

Now I need to make a shopping list for the last few items I need and finish assembling the rest of them.

The Aero Precision matching receivers are really nice. They have an integrated trigger guard so no roll pin or trigger guard gap to irritate your finger. They have a set screw bolt release pin so no roll pin their either. That makes for zero roll pins in the lower. The Aero M5 LPKs go together easily. I usually polish the detent pins and go over everything to make sure there aren't any burrs or other problems with the LPK. That was time well spent on the AR Stoner LPKs I used for the M4E1 lowers but the Aero M5 LPKs were pretty much ready to go beside cleaning off the sticky lube they use. I expect the Aero M4 LPK would be the same.

The enhanced uppers are very nice too. I have never needed a full length top rail so I have been trying to use the Quantum Mlok handguards from Aero. They can be dirt cheap when bought on sale and using a coupon. The Mlok will let me put rails or accessories anywhere I need and acts as a vent so barrel cooling will be good. The upper to match is a bit more expensive than some but since it reinforces the front of the receiver it eliminates POI shift when heavily loaded on a bipod, sling or maybe pressed against a tree for a rest. Overall, it's cheaper than a cheap upper with an expensive handguard and it has some benefits that you can't get without buying an even more expensive upper.

Any way, thanks to Schuyler Arms for the great Labor Day sale prices. Their shipping was pretty fast. Any Aero Precision parts shopping I have to do in the future will start there. I only have 5-6 go to retailers for online gun parts orders but they did plenty to get on that list.

Now I've got to finish the rest of these things.

Schuyler arms has some great deals on sets. That is where I get mine. I too like the enhanced uppers. Everyone has their opinion but I like the look/feel of the APs

One problem found: the Aero M5 magazine release does not seem to engage the magazine notch very deeply.

I discovered this testing the trigger with a Wheeler Engineering mag well vise block that is supposed to lock in with the mag release but wanted to fall out.

From the look of it, the Aero mag release might be the same as the M4 piece. Some companies seem to do that. I think a DPMS mag release might have a longer stud and be easier to install. Either way, the catch protrudes less in to the magazine well when bottomed out in the mag release slot than it seems to do in an AR15. I think the real problem is that the mag release slot is not milled deep enough but I don't want to cut through the anodizing to fix the problem so I'll try to get a few DPMS style magazine releases and relieve the area around the stud where it bottoms.

I think about 0.010-0.015" should do it.

The reason why the vise block fell out is that it is too narrow. A pmag was held fairly securely but I don't want to figure out it doesn't latch well enough when I'm firing so I'm going to try to make it better.

I haven't tried Aero enhanced uppers until recently, I always thought they were expensive because at full price and a 15" railed handguard, they are not cheap. Then I bought an upper and handguard set on sale, then I saw the Quantum Mlok handguards on sale, then I saw Schuyler Arms and things snowballed.

An M5E1 lower, upper, 15" Quantum Mlok handguard and a customizable LPK worked out to about $280. Just add a barrel, BCG, gas system, charging handle, trigger, pistol grip and buffer/stock and you have a nice large frame AR.

I've been buying my Toolcraft BCGs from WC Armory, they are a good deal too but sometimes the wait can be long on backordered BCGs.

The Larue MBT is another good value. The Rise RA140 is nice if you prefer a single stage trigger.

It adds up to a damn nice large frame AR for less that a plain Jane AR15 used to cost.

I'm not really in to Gucci guns with all of the trendy hardware but I like to use the best reasonably priced parts and add quality where I can affordably.

It all just came to a head yesterday. I'm at about 3.5 guns complete now and it would be more if I had parts to start on the rest.

I recently built an aero lower with a Geiselle LPK and the mag release in tgat kit seemed to function fine. I think that I paid around $50 for the kit if I'm notbmistaken (the kit did not include a grip or trigger)

I think I paid $25 or $30 for the Aero LPKs and I wanted to go with Aero because it's always a good idea to match parts for large frame AR compatibility.

The money I saved let's me address the issue with a new mag release without being too upset.

It's not necessarily the length of the stud on the mag release that's a problem, it's how far the catch sticks in to the mag well. I could try to fix it on the Aero magazine catch but I would rather work on a mag catch that has the longer stud.

It's not a huge deal, I just want more engagement in the magazine so there is no chance they will pull out unintentionally.

I will have to look at my lower and check the mag release a little closer. When I built it, I just did a very cursory check of inserting a mag, making sure that I heard a click, and then dropping the mag. I didnt take a vsry close look at how well the catch engaged the mag
