I am new to LR shooting and am looking to build or buy and am confused as to what a chassis is. Is a chassis a high tech stock replacement or do you need a stock also? One poster said it was DBM that was a chassis. Someone square me away. I searched and googled resulting in no good clean explanation. It is not in the FAQ's, sorry if this is a dumb question.

Re: What is a chassis?

A chassis could be described as an aluminum "skeleton" or frame that the barreld action gets bolted to. They do not require bottom metal like a traditional stock would because the chassis often has a mag well built in. A chassis can have skins bolted to the sides of the frame such as in a AICS chassis. They can also be bare as in a McRees chassis where the skeleton or frame takes shape of the forend ect of a traditonal looking stock. Traditional stocks are generaly made from wood or fiberglass composits, they often require the use of bottom metal and or a trigger guard to hold internal or external mags

Re: What is a chassis?

XLR is one example of a chassis. Hope they dont mind posting their stock pic.

The chassis is modular and easy to add other accessories you may need. As stated it accepts magazines and usually a barreled action will bolt right in. The frame is rigid and has a vertical grip, adjustable LOP and comb, for prone shooting. It is recommended in some cases, over sinking a lot of money into a traditional stock and inlet, bottom metal and so forth. They are not for everyone, as they do have some weight.

Re: What is a chassis?

A chassis ( /ˈʃæsi/ or /ˈtʃæsi/; plural: "chassis") consists of an internal framework that supports a man-made object in its construction and use. It is analogous to an animal's skeleton. An example of a chassis is the underpart of a motor vehicle, consisting of the frame (on which the body is mounted) with the wheels and machinery........thank you Wikipedia.

Accuracy International designed, developed and supplied the L96 for the British forces in the 1980's. It was based on the use of a frame, or chassis, instead of a wooden or synthetic stock to mount the firing train. It provides a very robust platform and we have used that basic design for our AW, AE and now our AX Series weapons. In the 1990's we developed the AICS as a replacement tactical stock for the Remington 700. AICS stands for Accuracy International Chassis System.

I hope that helps.

Tom, that's the best explanation and description I've read in a long time.

Re: What is a chassis?

Chassis is for specific needs. Be sure you really need it before dropping the cash. Some folks Just do a kevlar stock, bedded action, and do just as well as a chassis.

Bottom line, you cant "buy a score". That being said, an AICS is frickin saweeeeeet!!!!
