Hello,

I'm trying to find a trainer bolt action for under 500. I haven't got into reloading yet and the .308 cost is racking up. And I can't and dont want to spend 2k on a .22

Looks like most people go with savages or marlins.

Any opinions will help.

Savage gets my vote. I have used a couple of savage rimfire in both 17HMR and 22LR that were pretty accurate. Of course they have the flimsy stock and all, but you can practice trigger pull, live fire and bolt cycle at a reduced cost. You could always just work on dry firing to become more proficient also.

I really like the CZ 452 Military Trainer. I like the (iron) sights on it. It's highly accurate. The sights are set up for 25, 50, 75, 100......all the way to 200 meters, on the slide bar like that on military surplus rifles, (1903, Mosin's, Etc).

Using standard velocity rounds, IT WORKS.

Now I know most don't like iron sights, but in my old age I've moved into the CMP GSM games (which includes Sporter Rimfire) and I've found this is the perfect gun for that in my opinion.

Oh, and I just paid $339 at Cabala's, that leaves a lot left over of the $500 budget for ammo. You can get a lot of ammo for $161, then you got some training.
