what is your idea/opinion of a "compact" scope ? i was thinking about this one: the new Nightforce NXS 2.5-10 x 32 Compact but this is what is holding me back, "Overall Length: 12in"

what i want in power range is something between 2X to 12X, (possibly higher on the high end) length, between 8" to 10".

anyone got any ideas or suggestions ?

thanks

Re: What is "Compact" in a scope ?

The new S&B 3-20x PMII is "compact". It's the same size as the current 3-12x PMII but has 80% greater magnification.

Magnification is the focal length of the objective lens divided by the focal length of the ocular (eyepiece) lens assembly. So, S&B found a way to make the focal length of the ocular much smaller to achieve higher magnification and still retain the FOV and so on.

That's how to make a compact scope.

have you used this scope ? looks like a "FUN" thing but that is all.

Re: What is "Compact" in a scope ?

I went from a 10.5" 4X scope to the 12" NF and it seemed big at the time. But I quickly got used to it and highly recommend it. While the 2.5-10X32 is an SFP scope, since it tops out at 10X that's not much of an issue. I don't think I've ever ranged a target without wanting to be at 10X anyway...even when I tried it at 5X out of curiosity. Tracking is excellent.

I do recommend, however, getting one with zero-stop because the compact turrets have no indication of how many turns you've made. Also, match the turrets to the reticle (.e.g mil/mil).

It just depends on exactly what features you want in addition to compact. Based on you selection above, I'll assume you want: illuminated, exposed turrets, 2-12, light and small as possible.

Choices diminish quick once you decide on illuminated reticles and exposed turrets. Here is what I can think of:

NF 2.5-10x32 (19oz, 12in)
Leupold Mark 4 2-8x36 (16oz, 11.3 in)
USO 1.8-10x37 (24oz, 12 in)
Swarovski z6 1.7-10x42 (18oz, 12.8in) no exposed turrets
