Since the Fed 210M primers are almost impossible to get, what is everyone using these days for good LR match primers? Also, are magnum primers necessary in something like a 7mm RM?
TIA

Re: What large rifle primers?

I would use a magnum primer in your 7 mag. Federal 215 or 215M, CCI #250, Winchester LRM, Remington LRM, or several others. When you find some, buy enough to last you for about a year.
The CCI BR primers have a thinner cup, so I don't know that it would be the best primer for a magnum round.

Then use what YOU want........My ans. was to the OP.
My crono. sez much lower ES in all of my loads smokeless and BP.
In some cases(pun)even better than FGMM.

Re: What large rifle primers?

Thanks for the answers and input. As far as accuracy/consistency, do any of the above stand out as better or worse (or am I splitting hairs)?. I'm building a custom 7mmRM, but it's going to be for paper/steel @ 1K yds, not a "competitive" rifle, but I'd still like to eliminate as many variables as possible, within reason. Also building a 7mm08, same purpose, shorter range. The 7mmRM barrel is a gain twist Bartlein #9. I'm going to chamber for middle of the road AFA ammo...I don't want to turn the necks on my brass, but I want a good fitting chamber. I'm only saying this to let you know where my thinking is/what my goal is.
Thanks again.

Re: What large rifle primers?

Personally, I've always used CCI BRs and standard CCI LR primers (don't load for any magnum rifles, so I can't comment on magnum primers). I have a few hundred FGMM and I think a few Remington, but haven't actually tried them. Of course, I limit the BR primers to my .308 loads, and load standard large rifle primers for hunting rounds.

I've heard pretty good things about Wolf LR primers, and actually ordered 3k today to try in my AR10 and hunting rifles.

Is the CCI 7.62 a magnum also?

Re: What large rifle primers?

I have always used Federal match primers for large rifle, and Remington 7 1/2 for 5.56x45. But with the difficulty of finding them, I tried the CCI BR primers, and to my surprise, my loads all seemed to give better accuracy with the CCI primers. I just wish I would have tried them sooner.

But my 300 Win mag has always liked the Federal 215M primers. And fortunately, I have enough to last quite a while.

I sure wish primers would be a bit easier to find.

Re: What large rifle primers?

Well I was able to find some Fed 215's so I ordered 2K. Now my question is what's the difference between the 215, and the 215M? (they were out of the 215M's) Is it just more consistency, or is there an actual chrge difference?

Re: What large rifle primers?

I use CCI BR-2's for match work, CCI-200's when I can't get 'em, and Winchester WLR for service rifle and hunting ammo applications. I got no beefs with Fed 210M's.
