What next?

So, this will be very vague at first. I am kicking around the idea of doing some sort of custom build. I have built my AR's and built a good shooting 308 off of a Stevens 200 action. Pic below.

I want another bolt action rifle but dont know what or why. I use the 308 in F Comps. This is a very loose ended question with obviously lots of possibilities. But if I have AR's and the 308 already what should I build next? I would love a custom action rifle with maybe an XLR Chassis. I am just beginning to think about it so throw some ideas out there. Any thoughts?

I would like something that is reasonable to reload. I reload in 223, 308 and 450.

Do a .223 heavy bolt action. Their fun and well... normally cheap to shoot. Since you reload for .223 you could develope a load for it easily.

I have a heavy tactical .223 that I cut down and threaded for a can. I LOVE it and its soo much fun to shoot all day long.

I have seen some sick 284's as I thought about that as a project. I would honestly go with a 7saum the BC and volcities that can be achieved on paper make it an extreme long range gun that would be a challenge. Just my two cents

That was my first thought, was doing a .223. I know its tough right now, but, anyone have any input on where to get an action at?

What about a .243? I can still find some .243 ammo around at some local stores so the components might not be to hard to find for it.

You might go around to some of your local stores and look at what you can still find to use as a guide for a caliber. That way if you don't have all the components for it you have a better chance of finding some on the shelves so you can still shoot.

I think that the current Savage Long action rifles can be configured and reconfigured rather easily, and that setting one up with a switch barrel capability gets the most mileage from the least expenditure.

Let's ask ourselves, just how many rifles can any of us shoot at any one time? For me, that answer has always been "just one".

So, why not upgrade/blueprint an action, fit it with a well configured stock that has the ideal ergonomics for the shooter, and install good optics and mounts.

From that point on, it becomes a question of chambered barrels and whatever bolt part, or entire bolt, swaps might be necessary to accommodate those chamberings.

Greg,

You bring up a good point. I have a friend that would buy my stock off of the 308 and that would allow me to put it in an XLR and have the funds that I was going to use towards another build to spend on much better glass.

I really don't need another precision rifle, so, I have debated on just getting a better stock and better glass for the 308. When it comes down to it and I get to longer distances I would always choose the 308 over say, a 223 anyway.
