What are the pda's you guys are using for in-the-field firing solutions? I already have a Kestrel 2500 for gathering field data. I do not have an Iphone or a Droid, and would rather purchase a unit that is specifically designed to run ballistic programs in the field. Thanks in advance fellas.

I'm sure its a fine unit, but at almost 2K its a little high priced for a lot of us out here on a budget. Just Saying.

+1 on Trimble Nomad.

I got mine for $695 delivered from a Engineering firm that was downsizing their surveyors unit. It was used but in great shape.

Are you asking for the specific program field firing solutions or are you asking generically "in-the-field firing solutions"?

Not asking for the ballistics programs (software) people are running. Just the hardware (PDA's, Palm Pilot's etc...) they are running them on. I'm gonna look into getting one of the Trimble's. If anyone knows of a less costly alternative I'd love to hear it?

Nightforce Exbal

Steve, most are all the same accuracy wise... I use LB3 and FFS the most. </div></div>
Thank you...

Re: What PDA's you guys using?

One more thing Frank....how do these programs on this hardware compare to say Ballistic FTE on an iPhone or iPod touch? I'm talking as far as accuracy and user interface and such. Meaning for the average weekend shooter or competition shooter is there a reason to switch to a Nomad with one of these programs?

Hey I got one of those! Girlfriend gave me one as a present. Didn't know I could use it for firing solutions. What software do you use on the tab?

Re: What PDA's you guys using?

The dedicated hardware like the Nomad allows you to use features like connecting a Laser, GPS, or Kestrel to the program, they are much better for the field than the iPods, although iPods are small, have good battery life and you can get a decent case for them, but if you simply looking to say, target is 888 yards, give me an answer, Bulletflight is fine.

But there are a lot of features in LB3 and FFS not found in Apps... most Apps are pretty basic, the programs are much more powerful so they can do things like talk to other devices.

I fall back on Apps a lot, especially when just checking dope, but for the Tools, the dedicated systems are hard to beat.

Re: What PDA's you guys using?

I'm using an old Dell Axim X51v. It's a lot more fragile than the Nomad, but you can get one off Egay for cheap.

I'm running NF Exbal and just got Loadbase 3. Exbal has always worked well for me. I've noticed that after 800 to 1000 yards, depending on load, Exbal isn't as accurate. I think Loadbase is going to do a lot better in this regard, as it seems to be matching up with my data book for shots I've made out to 2000 yards. I've only had the program for a few days, and need to get out and shoot to verify, but so far it's matching up nicely with past data.

Loadbase is very feature rich!! It has an extensive library of bullets, loads, etc. It has a log book built in. Range estimater (similar to Mil-dot master). It syncs with you Kestrel for weather data. It has GPS features that allow you to range your targets via GPS data. It has Conversion features. It has ability to estimate Coriolis effect, Spin drift, Chrono velocity correction, BC of bullet, loop hole, and on and on and on.

Someday I'll have to try FFS.

Re: What PDA's you guys using?

get a itouch and buy an otter box.

there you go. a bullet proof PDA that can run ballistic software, and you can 'dedicate' it as a ballistic pda.

outdoes the trimble with their insane 2K pricetag

Re: What PDA's you guys using?

If your not going to be thrashing them, just taking it to the range. Are there any budget freindly options, or are you better of to get a smartphone/ipod and downloading some sort of application onto them?

Re: What PDA's you guys using?

I run Exbal on a Palm Tungsten E2. Works fine for my use, and the fact that I have 8-9 back ups for when this one goes down.

The Shooter app also works well on my Droid X...

Wish I had the Nomad though...
