Well like most 308 rifles, FGMM leads the way in a squared away load. Does anyone know what powder they use? This might be a stupid question, but they use the same powder for all their rifle calibers right?

One more, is there a powder that's fairly similar to what they use? (just incase its impossible for me to find)

Thanks guys!

4064 for the 175 SMK. Yes, stupid question on same powder for all Federal ammunition. If you look in your load book, see if you can find same powder used in 223, 308, 375 H&H, 416 Rem. Or even same powder in 308 for 125 gr bullet and 220 gr bullet. Different calibers and light to heavy bullets need different burn rates for optimal performance.

I spoke to a man in the late 1980s that used to work for Federal. He told me 42.5 grains of IMR 4895 in their cases topped by 168 SMK would be so close it would be scary. The main thing is the powder they use is not commercially available. They use what is called a "canister" powder. I'm sure the recipe has changed since then. But that load works for me out to about 600 yards.

I hope this helps.
Good luck.

The powder in FGMM 168s I bought back in the late 1980s was distinctly 4064.
The powder in FGMM 175s I bought a few years back was distinctly RL-15. Now I hear they are back to using a 4064 equivalent, which is fine by me since I have now switched back to 4064 since Alliant couldn't take care of our needs through the "shortage".

Although it may be true, I call BS on that canister grade crap. I think that's just some fairy dust marketing stuff they tell reloaders so we keep buying their bullets.

All I can tell you is what the man told me. And when I loaded them they shot very well IN MY GUN. I can't say what that particular load will do in someone else's rifle. But in the one I had at the time it shot smaller than 1 MOA out to 300 yards. At 300 it broke to just under 4".

The story Jim told me may have been full of beans. But that load worked for me. All I know is what he told me.
