What powder system do you recommend?

Re: What powder system do you recommend?

Varget meters easily.

The redding 3BR is good. So is the uniflow and the harrels.

All in all they are a little slow for my liking, and since having recently aquired a chargemaster i cant be bothered with manual throwers any more.

Stick with the varget, you wont regret it. If you decide to get a manual thrower dont forget to get yourself a powder trickler also

Re: What powder system do you recommend?

I run the Redding as well and I love it. Seems to be very accurate. I weigh each charge on a digital scale and it is almost always within a tenth of a grain.

"What do you guys think of the Redding 3BR powder system? I like the Mic on it."

I agree and I have no use for digital dumpsters at all.

But my some of my dummy friends prefer their Lyman 55, Hornady, RCBS, etc, so what do they know? One is even silly enough to say his little Lee "Perfect" measure is more accurate (consistant) than his Uniflow when working with tubular powders but that can't possibly be true; the Lee is much too inexpensive and made of plastic rather than cast iron.

Re: What powder system do you recommend?

The 3BR works great for me. My "system" is to set the measure about 1 or 2 tenths below my desired weight. My RCBS 505 is at eye level on a shelf over my bench. I dump the charge directly to the scale pan, set it on the scale, and trickle the last 2 tenths or so into the pan. I have only used H-414 and Benchmark so far, and I can set the measure so close with them that about a third of the dumps are dead nuts on the desired weight.
I'm expecting a little less accuracy from the stick powders.

Write down the mic setting from each load you use, and it's easy and fast to dial back where you want it. Redding includes instructions for setting up a graph on powders you use a lot.

I use a charge master 1500 as well and it works pretty good with varget and IMR 4895. It usually gets it with in .1 but every now and then its .2 or .3. All in all I have been pretty pleased. Got it as a gift so can't really complain.

I am a FIRM believer that the Lee Perfect Powder is one of the best dispensers out there especially for the price. It even meters long extruded powder within .1 grn if not EXACTLY on the dot.

Actually, I agree. And at any price. Or, for 12-15 times more money we could have one of the digital dumpsters.

I 2nd the Chargemaster once reprogrammed to speed the process up but
manual throwers are great for back up.

Re: What powder system do you recommend?

If you have a manual meter that throws within a 1/10th you've got a damn winner. I have or have had all the meter mentioned, and two things about them all. First, the Lee is really pretty accurate, which is counterintuitive as it is a cheap little thing. I don't like it for just that reason, and HELL no I never had it consistently throw within a 1/10th. I still have the Harrels Premium Culver, just beacuse it is such a nice precision tool, but it won't throw consitently within a 1/10th either, but close as anything I have used. The Redding is a good piece, and I had mine until just recently when I gifted it to a buddy starting into shooting and reloading. It was close to the Harrel, not quite as good day in day out, but damn good, and NO, not within a 1/10th consistently.

I had a glitch with my Chargemaster just today, but I got it back up and running, and it has been flawless til today, for several years. It is a better mousetrap IMO, and I have the LABORATORY grade scales to check all this data. If you want a manual measure, the Redding will serve you well, if you are looking to save $ the Lee Perfect is darn hard to beat. Dumping into a pan and trickling charges up is pretty slow to me, and I load too many rounds to do that---whether you need to weigh them all or not is a whole other argument--a lot of old school folks will tell you it's about VOLUME, not weight--and so if you are in that camp, a regular old powder measure is all you need! I will say that when I set up my Harrel and throw charges that I am not that peculiar about, I can go faster by about 2.5 to 1 over my chargemaster on charges in the 50 to 60 grain range.
With Varget, which I usually run around 45 grains, the time difference is less, but still I can usually 'dump' 2 loads to one with a 'thrower' vs the Chargemaster.

Good luck!

+1 on the 1500, as far as overcharges go, go get yourself a McDonalds straw, cut off 2" and push the 2" piece in the stem and let a very small piece stick out, you can even go flush. No more clumps for me. Maybee a .1 occasionaly
