I want to change the rings on my Savage when mounting a Nikon Prostaff. Maybe change the base too, but I haven't decided yet. I want a 2 piece base for sure if I do change it. I also don't want to break the bank, but want a reliable set. Any suggestions?

I was originally looking at the $6-10 Weaver's they sell at Walmart, but wasn't sure how they would hold up or if they are any better than the package deal rings. I also want to mention that I hope to upgrade to the SWFA SS 5-20x when it comes out. I realize this may be a while so these rings may be used for a year or two. I mainly plan to hunt with this rifle, so want solid mounts, but I don't want to spend $50 on a set of rings. So, what should I go with?

Re: What rings should I get?

Do you really want to skimp on the foundation that secures your $800+/- SS scope to your rifle?

Just a thought....and as a minimum, I would start with Burris (either Tac or signature) for price, but would recommend Seekins Precision for quality.

Re: What rings should I get?

Well, I'm using them to mount a Nikon Prostaff now, and will have to buy new ones when the SS comes out. That's why I don't want to spend a ton right now as I know I will have to replace them again whenever the SS comes out since the tube size is different.

Re: What rings should I get?

If I remember right, the Nikon is a 1" tube and the SS is a 30mm tube? If that's right, you *could* get a high quality set of rings now and put a ring reducer in there in the mean time, then when the upgraded optic comes in you can have the rings immediately. Ring reducers can be had for about 10 bucks on the cheap.

Re: What rings should I get?

Yes the Nikon is 1" and the SS is 30mm which is why I figure I'd have to change the rings anyway. Hmm, ring reducers might be an idea. Are they pretty decent? I don't want something that will slip around or anything.
