Rifle Scopes what scope for 338 lapua mag?

Re: what scope for 338 lapua mag?

Depends what he's trying to do with it. Assuming he's going with the LM for its ballistics, he probably wants to hunt big deer, pigs, elk, moose, black bear etc at 250 to 700 yards even at dawn and dusk.

The whole deal is designed for longer ranges, so I'd go 5.5/6 x 20/24 or so with a big objective lens. Maybe even a Hubble. But, not greater magnification assuming it's not a pure target rifle.

Re: what scope for 338 lapua mag?

I had a USO on my 338 LM and sold it. USO was fine for 308 and 260 Rem but eye relief was too short for the 338 LM- eye piece would peck eyebrow. I have used NXS 5.5-22x50 and PR 5-25x 56 scopes on 338 LM and was satisfied. Much prefer the PR but either will work.

I've owned all 3 of the above scopes and they are perfect on a 338 Lapua

I am currently useing a 5X25X56 S&B with a P-4F reticule and it is great even in the field

Not too many, but remember we do take trades for just about anything of value and in this case it could be land, cars, trucks or boats.

The innovative 6-24x72 SAM (Shooter-supporting Attachment Module) riflescope with digital information display is an ideal tool for the user. Under menu guidance, SAM provides shooters with all the information necessary for precise target acquisition, without requiring them to take their eyes off the target. SAM automatically incorporates ballistics and environmental parameters such as temperature, air pressure and humidity to compute the bullet drop compensation in elevation and azimuth. If these values are set to 0 on the top and side knobs, the riflescope is ready for zeroing

Nightforce 5.5-22x56 with reticle and knobs of choice would work great and save you about $1400 over the S&B. I used one on a 408 Chey Tac to shot to 2000 yards on an MOA sized target without a problem.

Re: what scope for 338 lapua mag?

Although I'm a NF fan myself on my 338 LM I have a Leupold Mk 4 8.5-25x50 with TMR reticle. It's a good match and I got a deal on it I couldn't say no to...and so far no regrets.I know many here have opinions against Loopy my feeling is that it's a very good scope with nicely "neutral" glass...meaning color, contrast, resolution is a nice middle balance.Though they may not be great they do many things VERY good.

Re: what scope for 338 lapua mag?

Please note these are my personal opinions and only one scope was harmed in the formulation of them.

The USO we have had have all had problems. Worse than their product is their customer service, consistently over promising and under delivering...

The Nightforce 5-22X56 and the Leupold Mark 4's are great scopes and you will probably be happy with for a long time. (provided you never look through an S&B or an Zeiss Optronics.)

Depending on your friends budget, Leupy, NF, PH and S&B in that order.

Hope this helps.

I bought the P4 and while its great in low light and on the lower powers it is a thick reticle when shooting for groups and using 25x.

I would but the P4 Fine second time around but I am not to stressed. For Shooting Game the P4 works well.

Re: what scope for 338 lapua mag?

If you use a spotter with a reticle for distance estimation or a LRF then you are MUCH better off with SB PMII 3-12X50 DT 0,1cm cliks with P4 or Milddot 2nd Gen reticle. Smaller scope hels in the field. P4F is too thin for low light shooting. If you do not ever shoot in low light then you might be able to use P4F.

You can carry a spare aluminium baseball bat in your rucksack if you feel you can not live without the big size of the SD PMII 5-25X56 :)

Basically it comes down to what you need the scope for. For shooting 3-12X is just fine out to 1500m. Most militaries in the world have chosen 3-12X50 or 3-12X56 for their 338LMs and 300 Win Mags.

Re: what scope for 338 lapua mag?

Another vote for the NXS 5.5-22, as the magnification is really all that you will need and the crosshairs are fine enough that you will not cover up a target at the distances that the 338 is capable of.
