I have over 600 rounds of Silver Bear and Tulammo mixed unreloadable brass.

Is there anything I can do with it beside throw it away?

Are there any places that will take it to melt it down and re-use it?

Does anyone on here want it?

Send it to me (on your dime of course) and I will recycle it and spend the money wisely LOL. Seriously the scrap prices are high right now so it is worth money. Most scrap dealers will take it but shop around prices do vary.

Re: What should I do with used brass?

You are not talking about "used brass", they are steel cases. Throw them in the trash. You would need a lot at $0.15/lb to make any money at the scrap yard.

10 cents a pound here for steel.

Brass though is $1.40........

The OP can indicate anything he likes. He told us the name brand and that it was non-reloadable and all but one person gave him totally useless info, indicating they answered before they took 30 seconds to research an answer. It took me less than 30 seconds to collect the info that would have answered his question correctly, although I already knew the answer. This is only one thread that makes me wonder about the quality of reloading advice that is being disseminated in this forum.
Still shaking his head.

Re: What should I do with used brass?

I don't know if you consider my info useless or not...but it was accurate regarding scrap price in my region, and reinforces the notion that steel cases aren't worth much without major volume; and real brass can add up to a decent payday.

Just the other week sold 64 pounds of old brass I've been collecting for a while, $90. At least the "brass" the OP has is worth more than than old fence wire. The 320 pounds of that I just "sold" brought a whopping penny a pound. Scrappers hate fence wire with a passion, and many won't even take it. Wasn't even worth picking up off the ground for $3.20.

Since threads almost always answer many unasked questions by default as conversations morph along, for those who thus wouldn't need to ask now.....none of the info posted so far is entirely "useless".

Except maybe the shaking the head part............

Re: What should I do with used brass?

Recycle Cartridge Brass if you can or not able to reload . OR If You are not able to Case Sort & clean it up & put it up for sale to others who Re-load .

I, just a couple weeks back cleaned-out my reload room & went threw several 5-Gal. buckets of Brass & sorted out what I was keeping & what I was throwing-Out .
I ended-up Recycling ( 129 Lbs. @ $-2.04 LB. ) for my troubles picking-up, storing & then taking many hours of picking threw it all . It helps buying a couple more tanks of Fuel for driving out and Shooting More .

When you recycle Brass . You have ( Good Quality, Clean Yellow Brass ) with empty Cartridge Brass . Pay-Price will change weekly also depending on market price .
& that is very good quality Brass for Recycle . It's not top Dollar Brass but Cartridge Brass is up there for getting better payback on Recycled non-Ferrous metal Price-$ . Also you will get a few Cents better Payback for recycling more than 100-Lb. usually .
& Run A Magnet through the Brass before taking to recycle, As it Does Piss them-off when they have to pick out Steel Case .
.

Dude, your right there's no brass from the former Soviet Union. Glad I didn't recycle all that berdan brass.

Re: What should I do with used brass?

I appologize. I have had a bad week and that was no reason to get a case of ass over this thread.
Technically speaking everything is reloadable but beyond the skills of most and steel cases aren't worth the effort or possible ruination of one's dies.
NEVER sell brass at a scrap yard unless the primer pockets won't hold a primer. It is worth vastly more for sale on the internet.
Again my appologies.

Re: What should I do with used brass?

I did take a big pile to get Recycled but from watching For Sale threads here with people selling used Brass . It LOOKS to me that they sit on it a Long-Time before it Sells ? & it is not worth the trouble with answering PM's & people trying to knock your price down .
Plus I don't think a lot of people here trust shooting Range brass or are to lazy or don't know how to Prep. bulk Range Brass .
So out of my buckets of Brass . I just kept what I personally reload and said FuckIt . People need to just go out and pony-up some real money for New Brass & walk the ranges for themselves for loose Brass that they Reload .
.

Re: What should I do with used brass?

simple fact that was being stated is everybody is talking about brass and the OP is talking about steel cases! I throw mine in my scrap trailer and my local guys will take it as long as it's not got a live primer in it. Other then that, yes the silver bear and Tula cases are pretty much useless unless you want to glue/weld/solder them together and make something abstract!

As far as brass goes, well that's where the 5gal bucket comes into play. Last I checked it was $1.60LB here, but that's been awhile.

Anyhow, to the original OP, it's useless for anything else.

rec.guns
How many uses for a spent .22 cartridge?
Tikka223 Jun 21 2001,
Glue them together and make a boat.Turn them over and sell them as new ammo to stupid people. Glue them to your desk as a pencil holder. Replace your missing teeth with them. Make a big pile of them and use it as a radio antena. When you walk in the woods make a trail with them so you can find your way home. Ad them to soggy breakfast ceral to make it crunchy. Or do as my gun club and sell them as scrap metal.

Re: What should I do with used brass?

Actually there are guys using spent 22 brass to make bullet jackets for .224 and .243 cal etc bullets. This is not a new idea Hornady got his start working out of his garage using spent 22 cases to make bullets using the 22 cases for jackets. It is coming back to life with the recent cost of metals going thru the roof people are starting to swage their own bullets.

Well, proof positive there will be at least one lost soul in the world, if ever the bullet supply were to dry up.

I'd reckon that melting down wheel weights is stupid too.........

couldnt say it better myself

Re: What should I do with used brass?

And it will dry up. OH-Blah-Blah was quoted yesterday as saying " I am going to start working on gun control, just under the radar" I personally believe ammuniton and components will be a big part of gun control in the future and I am always thinking of ways you could do it yourself. They are trying real hard to ban lead projectiles. But I dont think they will ever be able to stop people from getting creative and making things themselves whether it would be Cases, Propellents or bullets and primers.

Re: What should I do with used brass?

Ya know, I like DIY stuff and can't argue that knowing how to make jackets from 22 cases is a good thing. I also agree that our congressional leaders would, for the most part, love to take our components away.

However...in the meantime, I think my time/money is better spent stocking up on good components now while they're available. I can't speak for everyone, but im pretty sure I can earn enough money in an hour to buy a LOT more pre-made quality bullets than I could make in that same hour.

For that matter though, I can't justify reloading financially - but I enjoy it, and can't GET ammo as good as I can make.

Bottom line, if you enjoy it, great!
