What size target would you use for 1200-1400 yards

Like the title reads...looking for input on what size target would be recommended for 1200 to 1400 yards?
I am looking for a something that can be portable as I will be moving it around from shooting area to shooting area.

I was thinking a 12" x 12" 3/8" AR500 target. To small?

Anyways...let me know what you think.

Take care,Stan

I usually use the 75% IPSC. I have tried the 12x12" also, but it's a bit more challenging. However, it can be done.

I am doing alright my friend. That's some nice shooting you and Miss Amber did with the AR there. Looks like you guys have a very nice range. Next time I am in your neck of the woods, I may just give you a call for a little shooting session.

I would say the 75% is more enjoyable even with the wind. If you feel confident, then bring along the 12x12.

For sure if your ever up here drop us a line.

Yep...it is a nice range. But I have been getting bored with shooting 1000 yards.
So....I have been scouting places up in the high desert where I can get a little more range to stretch the 6mm legs a bit.
Right now it is cold (snow) up there though, so this will be a spring time thing I am planning.

I am going to go talk to one of the local metal shops and see what they have in the way AR500 scrap. Hopefully I can get a deal...shipping those larger target gets expensive.

Tale care,Stan

You probably could use 1/4 ar400 and save some weight. Mine has been pounded by 300WM's and 338's and past 600 is holding up fine. I use rounds and would probably use 1.5 moa to 2 moa (18 to 24 inches) for making the target and piant the center.

Re: What size target would you use for 1200-1400 yards

If your going to use it just for anything past say 800yds you can get away with plane old mild steel 1/2" thick. I get a bunch scrap mild steel for free and shoot 210vlds pushing 2950fps at 800yds and it doesn't even dent it. Around 650yds it will stop cratering and start denting. Then somewhere around 725 to 750 it stops denting it all together. I like to use say a 24"x24" square plate out to about 1600yds. Its a little heavy but it sure is nice to have on those days where the wind is swireling real bad.

Thanks gents. I know very little about steel. Someone suggested T1?

And thanks for the heads up on the 1/2". Yes...it will just be for way out there. And I am only shooting a 6XC and .243...not a lot of energy left in em past 800 yards.

Re: What size target would you use for 1200-1400 yards

I've seen a few people shoot a 17x10 man shape target at those ranges. Seems pretty fun and a bit chalanging..

Lowlight makes it seem pretty easy with his GAP haha

Im planning on ordering one for LV steel for those ranges and maybe a 12x12 circle 1/2 ar500

Re: What size target would you use for 1200-1400 yards

We have a (IIRC) 16x20 plate set up at 1500 yds. If the wind isn't switching , first round hits are pretty easy. But here's the kicker. It sits in a place that we *cannot* reliably see our misses. This would be MY biggest concern about using a 12x12. If you can spot your misses, and you have a fairly accurate platform, size will not be the issue. You can walk them in. But if you can't see your misses... sucks to be lost.

even 3/8" AR500 should be ok. I shoot my 338LM at 1k using those targets and they are fine. May want to check out the For sale section. There are a couple vendors that make AR500 targets for you. The prices are not too bad. Also, LVsteel Kurt also offer great targets as well.

Re: What size target would you use for 1200-1400 yards

I think bigger is better. If you can get it, and carry it. I shot a 20X30 3/8 ar500 plate that I made. I think it just build confidence when you hit the steel at all. Plus it give you a better idea just how far off you are to make those corrections. I paint my black for a base coat, then white on top. That way it really makes those 1200- 1500 yard hits easier to see. The center dot is the size of the paint can.
