...... would you choose for a 700 SPS-T that will serve double duty as a target and hunting rifle ? My top choices are HS 5R take off stock, or a McMillan A5. Is one more suited for double duty? Are there better options I have not thought of ?

For a target/hunting rifle I would look at the A5 with EDGE fill of the two you mention. It will be light for packing. However, I would look even harder at the HTG stock from Mcmillan. That would be my ideal target/hunting rifle.

Personal preference! Do you actually think the advice you'll get here will work for you? I freaking love my a-5's, but because I like them so much. Will it work for you? Why don't you hang out at your local range and see if you can find someone that will let you get a feel for it.

The gun is still in the build stage. I do have the HR stock already, but the A5 sure "looks" nice.

I have looked pretty hard at various stocks for this exact dual use set-up. I was able to get my hands on as many stocks as I could and arrived at the Manner's T2A.
Other stocks for you to consider would likely be the Mcmillan HTG, A1-3, and Manners MCS-T, and T3.
I considered many, but Manners had me sold at the word mini-chassis.

I'd want less contour and a shorter throat,in a McMillan Classic for Utility.
Wouldn't slum HS on a dare,they are dog shit. Typically like more contour in my A5's and HTG's are tough to swoon,no matter the build sheet.

IMHO stocks are complete personal preference. What good is a completely adjustable stock by company X if you're simply going to adjust it exactly like the non-adjustable stock sold by company Y? Don't get me wrong, adjustable stocks are great, but if there's a stock that already fits you perfectly.....

To add to my last post on your stock, if you're talking about getting a HS Precision. I had one that came on my Remington 308 and it split at the front sling stud after about 300 rounds. Like one of the other posters said; they're crap! Emailed them a couple of weeks ago and haven't heard a peep from them. I used to do a lot of fiber glass work so I fixed it myself just so I can shoot my 308 till my Manners get's here. Then it's out of here.

x4 Manners. Got a t4 on the way for my .338. For dual purpose the t3 or t2 is a GREAT choice. My cousin has 2 of the t2's and they shoot prone as well as offhand.

Just a thought but I would go with the 5r and shoot it stock and see what it will do.The .308 seems to shoot real well,like under half minute of angle with handloads.The stock is real nice.I have an sps-tactical.Shoots ok ,but I wouldnt get another as the barrels are only so so.

It sucks because we might recommend something here, but it won't feel right to you, and unfortneutly there isn't a place thatnyou can go try stocks like a clothing or shoe store. Just gonna be trial and error.
I was told for my needs (like yours) the b&c medalist a2 was a fine stock that fit my tight budget. Might wanna look into that. If your budget is open, then who k owe

The problem is I already have the Tactical. I also have already had a Badger bolt knob installed.

Once again; you can't go wrong with a Manners or either the McMillan. And once again the HS Precision is to be polite not a very good stock and customer service is pretty much non existant when you write and ask them why their stock broke after a few hundred rounds. Just my two cents worth
