Re: what the hell is this?

a 40 MM grenade, looks by the rifling that it was fired from a mk 19. Blue tip means TPT round. When that round hits something it is about like an M-80 going off.

What a tough MF

Re: what the hell is this?

Aj is correct. M918 fired out of a Mk19. I'd be careful with it as it is still a live explosive (albeit small). There's some that are blue tip but smaller around the middle that are solid aluminum, but this one has a charge. Man I miss that beast.....

Re: what the hell is this?

The base has that jagged edge from when the round detonated on target. the training rounds while not high explosive still have a charge comparable to that of an m-80 as I said earlier. when the front "dome" hits the target it detonates the small charge so that at long range 1500M plus you can see where your hitting. so by that jagged edge on the rear I would say that it is now safe. That is what it looks like from here anyway, be careful if there is one there are probably more and they don't all go boom right away.

Re: what the hell is this?

Was this a military or civilian range that you found that 40mm grenade on?

In the Army, we were always warned against picking up anything that resembled spent ordinance on the off chance that it was UXO. Especially if you don't know what it is, it is best to avoid handling it.

Re: what the hell is this?

Picking up unidentified objects on a range is pretty stupid!

If you don't know what it is leave it alone! For all you know that could have been a High Explosive round and not a training round!

Re: what the hell is this?

LEAVE UXO ALONE!!!

It looks to me that it was fired and never detonated when it hit, as people are saying above. Is a blue aluminum dealy bob work your fingers or eyes? I say not really...but that's just me. When I have fired those they are hit or miss on detonation if the soil is soft or swampy, that very easily could be live. And they give off a hell-ova flash when they do. be careful!

Re: what the hell is this?

I hope that you are not storing this in your house or next to your gas can in the garage. If it is from a civilian range then I may be even more suspect. I came across a blue grenade on a civilian range that had not exploded. Yes, the blues are supposed to be refillable training grenades with just a low power blasting cap in them. Some dipshit stuffed it with gunpowder and tried to rig a used grenade fuse to set it off. The item was properly disposed of but I also go by what the military teaches and the wisdom here "DON'T PICK SHIT UP OFF THE RANGE" While it may look like some disposed dildo that doesn't mean you are going to have a good time with it. You may want to consult a professional about this item because if it is has had a bubba make over then your fingers and bystanders will thank you for doing the smart thing. One last thing, where the heck is this range?

Re: what the hell is this?

thanks for the feedback. I will move it away from my reloading area and tell my girlfriend she can't have it. Suspect it was part of DOE training at NRAWC.
cheers,

No shit.

If you don't know what it is DON'T FRIGGIN' TOUCH IT!!!

I have been in training areas littered with dud 155's, 81's and 60mm. One kick can kill you.

I don't recall what kind of charge was in the "practice" 40mm rounds. I still wouldn't dick with it.

AND... The rounds are not interchangeable. The m203/m320 rounds are low velocity 40X46mm while the mk19/mk47 rounds are a high velocity 40X53mm. Its a mk19/mk47 practice round not the crowd dispersal(m1029) as mentioned in another post. Dont collect UXO wildman.

Re: what the hell is this?

That is a 40mm TP (training practice)Round, DODIC B584, M918 Linked. It is fired out of a MK-19. The B584 has a spotting charge in the back of the round. Because the back end has been blown out, thats the jagged metal you see at the back. It is a sensitive fuse round because of the spotting charge. We have a hand full of these things in the office. It can't hurt you, it has been fired and functioned. But you should have just left it alone. if you need to know what it is take a picture. Never pick up UXO.

That guy is nuts on Sons of Guns, he does some things pretty cool but IMO he's kinda a hack.

Not quite the same and not interchangeable.

M203: Low Pressure 40mm, Max Range ~400M

MK19: High Pressure 40mm, Max Range ~2000M

Re: what the hell is this?

Hey I was EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) You need to get rid of that NOW. It still has the charge up front. They can go off very easy. I was training some guys on the MK19 and the rds. were hitting the tops of small trees and detonating. Get rid of it.Bring it back to the range where you found it. Dont pick up UXO. Did you see what happened to the fella that had the primer go into his hand? Well if this goes off you won't have a hand.

Yeah some of the stuff they do is cool and pretty good. But then some of it reminds me of American Chopper with guns, grab a bunch of Sch 40 steel water pipe and just start welding, who cares about weight and bulk, so long as it looks like a collage of American pickers rolling around out there.

I like American guns a little better but even then you have the for TV thing going
