Look, the dude will more gear than you imagine. He will probally be issued 3 different multi tools and a couple folders. If he doesnt, then he can buy one from the PX/BX with his fat tax free check.
Truth is, anything he will need will be issued, or the guys in his section will square him away. Dont try and make him look like a gear queer to a bunch of guys who have multiple/deployments. He will get shit on by his section and made fun of. Let them square him away and if he NEEDS something, he will either buy it or ask for it.
Thats actualy a good idea. Once you find out where he is, A cornhole set would also be a great idea. fun way to kill time durring downtime and not on mission, and not as loud/heavy as horseshoes and can be set up anywhere, even indoors.

Well, he got his official papers and first week of July he's headed to Eastern Afghanistan.
I'll be giving him the Leatherman MUT and sending whatever he asks for while he's there.

I wouldn't suggest a MUT... I know plenty of units that are issued similar items. Just meee.. I know I was issued something similar on my first deployment. I can't say I ever really used it more than maybe a couple times just for random shit. But hey if he isnt issued one then by all means that couldn't hurt and may be pretty cool
Mail him tins of Copenhagen in a sealed airtight bags while he's deployed. Hard to get the fresh, stateside stuff.
If he doesnt have a HOG saddle or a PIG saddle, its a tool you cant work with out.

Baby wipes like people said I liked the travel sized packs the fit in a cargo pocket nicely so you always have them on you. It he smokes cigars get him a 5 stick and 20 stick hurfador and cigar of the month club from cigar international and a good lighter. if he dips they make a MOLLIE dip holder. Once he gets there send him a case of monster. I found cigars and monster could get me anyplace I needed to go.
Some Nescafe 3in1 coffee packs. The Canadians got me hooked on them over here. You can add them to cold/room temp water for an "iced coffee" or of course with hot water. On a multi-dayer it was super easy to mix some up in a water bottle and either drink it as-is, or throw the bottle in an MRE heater pouch and have lukewarm coffee.
It's cold as FUCK over here right now, so some field-expedient caffeine that warms the bones is a huge bonus.

If you want to get him something he can use operationally, wait until he's there to see what hasn't been provided already and send that. I had a blast with a bunch of squirt guns from the dollar store while I was over. It's the little things. Give us enough free time and we will invent ways to amuse ourselves.
