What twist for 22" .308

Re: What twist for 22" .308

GAP gave me the option of both 1:11 or 1:10 but told me he thought the 1:11 barrels were better. Also told him I wanted to shoot 180 subs in the gun as well.
Might help.

Re: What twist for 22" .308

It depends on the load you want to use, you need to have a faster twist for a heavier bullet in order to stabilize it. Example: 1-12" twist for 170 gr or 1-14" for 168 gr. Not that these are the specs for that bbl but it's just an example. So you want to pick a twist rate that will accomodate for the maximum load you will use.

I was shooting 185vld through a 1-11 1/4. They shot great. Generally its harder to over stablize a bullet then under stablize it. Lawton barrels are good. Go with 1-11. Barrel length isn't an issue (mine was 20"). I had a load with match prepped brass and H4895 that shot 5 shot groups at .285".

Re: What twist for 22" .308

Generally, a faster twist will not adversely impact accuracy with light (155gr) bullets and is needed to stabilize heavier bullets. Therefore, a 1:10 or 1:11 twist gives you the most flexibility. Now if you are shooting Palma competitions and will only use a 155gr bullet, then 1:12 twist is "the standard."

My 10 twist krieger shoots everything from 155's to 175's very well. I was told by a reputable smith that 11 twist is optimal for most conditions, but higher altitudes and cold weather sometimes reqiure the faster twist to stabilize the bullet. Also, if you're planning on shooting subsonic stuff you should stick with the 10 as it will stabilize a slow, heavy bullet.

hmmmm funny... my 1:11.25 shoots 155s - 185s just fine...
